I saw this on Twitter today and thought it was an interesting view of the Plug-In Toyota Prius: http://bit.ly/hMvCxZ

Too bad it doesn't work the way he explains, because that would be awesome.

So, has everyone followed the release of all the electric and hybrid vehicles from the LA Auto Show? If so, what's your favorite new car?

But the reviewer's observation doesn't jive with what the other articles have said - that it DOES run in EV mode for 13 miles at up to 62 mph...

    Help!

Not sure, but it sounds like that will only happen if you drive unrealistically to me, from what I've read. To run 100% on electric requires very little throttle input from what I have found out so far...

I ended up driving one, as well, finally, and I discovered that unless you drive ridiculously slow and under 60mph, no hills, no acceleration, etc, you might, and I say might(not likely) achieve 100% electric. Under normal driving conditions, there's no way possible.

I accelerated up a steep residential hill from a dead stop to 40 MPH without the engine starting, several times. So, it's quite likely.

Of course, that's isn't the point. It's to provide a significant MPG boost, not to eliminate gas use entirely.

That's interesting John, because under acceleration the motor definitely started with the one I drove. I think the ideal is that you could drive the car entirely on electric for up to 13 miles, then the motor kicks in, but that's not what I experienced, that's for sure.

You were likely at the final 1.5 miles of EV capacity then. At that point, the gas engine becomes much more sensitive.
