I believe the Bible says that god gave man "dominion" over all the other animals.

On the other hand, the virgin birth is not in the Bible (the original language only says "a young girl") and hell is not in the Bible (it only mentions "outer darkness" and it mentions "wailing and gnashing of teeth"). An awful lot of modern Christianity is not in the Bible, though it can be forced in with a sufficiently strong mental shoehorn. A couple of fairly large fundamentalist (Bible-literalist) sects assert that there is no hell, based on their reading of the Bible. And yet the great majority believe in both the virgin birth and hell. And the largest Christian church, the Roman Catholic, also believes in Purgatory and Limbo, neither of which is in the Bible.

But of course that begs the question that the Bible (other than the first 5 books, which comprise the Jewish Torah) was compiled by Christians, who carefully selected those writings that supported their theology. Far too many uneducated Christians believe that the Bible is the foundation for Christianity, when in fact the Bible is simply an anthology collected by Christians to justify a set of dogmas that predate the Bible.

And virgins have babies, dead people live forever, and the god of love will torture you for eternity unless you profess belief.

the virgin shall be with child is in isaiah (old testament) sheol (ot) is translated 'hell', while the first 5 books of the ot is the torah, the rest is also from jewish writings and history. purgatory and limbo are translations by the catholic church and you can google their reasoning. the new testament is a collection of letters and writings that testify to the truth. like any historical document, you can accept it or reject it, but you can't prove it.

From an English translation of the Old Testament, which was actually translated from Hebrew to Greek, then from Greek to Latin, and then from Latin to English:

"Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Emanuel, God with us."

First of all, the Hebrew word translated as "virgin" is actually "young woman." But once the bad translation was made, and the church decided to make it dogma, the bad translation stuck.

Second, the O.T. passage so often taken as a prophesy of Jesus, says that the woman in question would name her son Emanuel. But Mary named her son Jesus. So the passage cannot refer to him. Sure, "Emanuel" means "god with us" and Christians insist that Jesus was god and was with us. But the passage does not say that the boy in question would BE god with us, it says that the woman would "call his name Emanuel..." and Mary didn't call her son's name Emanuel! She called his name Jesus.

As for hell, it is true that Christians translate sheol as hell. But the Christian notion of hell, as a place of eternal fiery torment, bears no resemblance to the Jewish sheol. So you're just playing word games when you try to say that (the Christian concept of) hell is in the bible.

It would make about as much sense to decide to translate the Hebrew word for "house" as "spaceship" and then claim that there are space ships in the Bible.

And Spiderman: No, I never read infidels.org. I get most of my information from sources like The Teaching Company, and The Jesus Seminar. These are scholarly sources. What I know of the Bible itself comes mostly from reading the King James version of the Bible. Oh, yes, I've also read a bit of Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens, both very well-informed atheists.

Really! To be debating about what actual terms might mean from ancient texts that have been translated over centuries (both the Torah and Bible have evolved over time).....well we'd have better luck agreeing what free trade policies are good for the country. I learned a long time ago that it's pointless to bring up scientific reasoning about an immaculate conception or archiac units of measure. It's best to let everyone be with their beliefs: whether you agree with them or not.

i think matthew 1:18 mights it pretty clear, although, the wording might not be quite to your liking. as for translating, i would have to do research. but since all the protestant and catholic translations are the same, i would have to find some other expert source.

If they kept their beliefs to themselves, I'd agree with you. But when they try to deny basic human rights to people, or justify rape and destruction of the environment, or foment wars, based on a questionable translation of a hobbled-together collection of texts written two thousand years ago and more by people whose conception of disease was that it was demonic possession, well, then decent people need to speak out against it.

And it is relevant to this thread because the principle arguments by AGW deniers come down to a religion-based refusal to accept evidence-based science because it conflicts with their narrow interpretation of the above-mentioned book.
