    Here is the #:

I just got a postcard from the Toyota dealer offering the v10.1 version for $199. Out of the question, but if it were available for 25% of that I might consider it. As others have mentioned, it may be better to do the upgrade every few years.

I have a 2008 prius and was wondering if there is more functionality in the headunit software than the map updates. Stuph like getting the iphone to transfer address book, or letting you use more functions while car is moving - etc.

Considering what Toyota charges for a not very good Navigation system, updates should be on the very reasonable side when it comes to cost, $199 is on the outrageous side.

As with most, I feel that $199 is a little outrageous for a DVD with information on it. There's really not much special about the disc, either, that would justify a price that high for it. As someone else stated, $50 would be reasonable to me. Heck, even free annual or every other year updates would be a great "service" to the customers. Maybe they could "raise the bar" on that and market it as something others aren't doing. The others don't offer it free, right?

Needless to say, most roads change so infrequently, that I don't plan on updating the disk at all. If I'm going somewhere, it's probably been there for awhile, or at least that address has been. If not, I'll do it the old fashioned way and ask a person.

I agree with you. I have a 2 year old tom tom and there are some noticeable flaws. Like when looking up POI like Walmart sometimes it is just wrong and puts a Walmart two blocks away.

Minor issues that my iphone comes in handy. Plus I try to not rely too heavily on the GPS. only in areas im not familiar with. It is very handy. But other than that, I use it for what I need it. Im not dependent on it

I just purchased the DVD at $199.00. Being one of the first 2010s, I was endowed with version 8.1 from the start, so 2 years was a good time to upgrade considering some of the outdated and inaccurate roads I've found. I was also betting on it solving a couple of Bluetooth problems (it did solve one, more on that later).

For everyone's reference, the dealer's cost was $159.20 (they forgot to remove their own order receipt). That's 39.80 worth of mark-up (or 25%). Flipping the math, Toyota gets 80%, dealer gets 20%. While there's some wiggle room for the dealer, it's clear that the dealers are paying a significant amount for the update as well. The suggested $50 would need to be in the form of a significant price reduction coming from Toyota itself, which would likely need to originate downstream fro Navteq or whomever their map provider is. Also worth remembering, the updates used to be $249 or higher - $199 is $50 less than we used to pay.

As is, my dealer doesn't sell enough to keep this version in stock - I had to order mine and it took about a week to arrive.

For the good news - along w/ that revised, yet outdated information is also slightly updated software. In addition to some streets I use regularly finally being present, the annoying 2-3 second delay answering an incoming call via Bluetooth phone is now gone! Callers can now hear you just about as soon as you answer! Caller information on outgoing calls also remains entirely on the screen (name, number, timer) - only the transfer button dims when you're > 5mph.

It would also seem I stumbled on an auto re-route around traffic feature I don't recall being there in 8.1 (it might have been, but I didn't have it on).

Those of us w/ Android phones - this update still doesn't fix the music player disconnect timeout issue (phone disconnects the media player connection after a period of idle time) - that's likely an Android problem.

I was hoping more detailed XM traffic would be permitted, but that may be as much a function of XM rather than the map data. Sadly, the traffic data still stops just after I-10 west and Loop 101 (Phoenix metro), and there's still no traffic flow data on AZ Loop 101 on the west end - just accident data.

For $200 you should get 4 free quarterly updates. It's too much money to pay for a stale DVD with lots of closed old businesses and missing new businesses in the POI database.

Out of curiosity, can someone here list the map vendors listed on the DVD?

    Tele Atlas? Navteq? Both? Others?

The are reports that some earlier version(s) for the 2010 had different map vendors. Is there a definitive list of North American map DVDs versions for the 3rd gen and their map vendors? I was very surprised to hear a report from a 2010 Prius owner mentioning Tele Atlas.

The nav DVD that came w/my 06 Prius (still using it) has only Navteq.

Staring at the 2008 DVD (8.1), the data is ©2008 Denso, ©2007 NAVTEQ, and ©2007 Tele Atlas North America, Inc. Data by InfoUSA ©2007.

It sounds like the DVDs not only update the Maps but also update and fixes bugs as well. I think now is the time to hack the headunit and install Android on it with Google Nav beta :) LOL

If there's an ARM CPU, you should be golden ;-) First step, however, is to get a cellular radio in there to make the maps work.

There is a downside to all but the most recent version of Google Maps - you need consistent data coverage for the maps to download. While outdated, the Prius has its map database onboard w/o the need for a data connection.

The Prius NAV system also works in tunnels and areas of poor GPS coverage through dead reckoning (gyroscopic and vehicle speed sensors).

So true about getting a Mobile connection to get live updated maps from the Internet.

At the CES last year there was an LTE equipped Prius III which I found was awesome. It was all decked out with e-tainment for the backseat passengers.

Now that the big VZ is offering LTE plans it maybe soon a HeadUnit with LTE is in the pipeline. I wonder if Entune has any of these capabilities in the future.

Back to the topic at hand - I noted today that the "famous" Finger Dance I youtubed a while back doesn't seem to work w/ the 10.1 update (in fact it may have stopped w/ 9.1). Not sure if the headlight trick works to get into service mode.

I totally agree with both the last 2 posts. What a joke Toyota! Come on. The XM Nav Traffic is just as bad. Not worth the subscription. I am ripping mine out of the car this spring and will store it for when the day comes I sell the car, but I am going with the new Kenwood DNX-9980 when it comes out in the next month or so. Will lose the parking assist feature but that is really no big deal. The Kenwood comes with free lifetime traffic and is Garmin navigation. Just doesn't get any better than that. Someone let me know if they find the torrent for the new version. If it turns up before I change it out, I'll at least take the upgrade.

I purchased a 2009 Prius and have received a post card inviting me to pay a ridiculous sum for navigation update V.10.1. Anyone know if the system is Tom Tom or Garmin? Anyone attempt to use either of the aforementioned CD's to "upgrade" the Prius Navigation? If so, what was the experience?

Its based on Navteq, not garmin or tomtom, and you have to use the Lexus/Toyota DVD. From previous posts here, the DVD apparently updates other aspects of the nav system besides just maps.

There's no way it's from either TomTom nor Garmin. There's 0 similarity in the UI to PNDs from either company. It seems the units are supplied by Denso. (Incidentally, if you dig around, you'll find that some (all?) GM North American vehicles w/nav also seem to have their systems sourced from Denso and thus have similar UI.)
Navteq is merely a map data supplier, as is TeleAtlas. Navteq supplies to Garmin for NA units and TeleAtlas to TomTom for NA units.

The nav disc that came w/my 06 (2nd gen) Prius has Navteq data and copyright from them. However, from http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-iii...tion-10-1-gen-6-update-dvd-2.html#post1244872, it looks like discs for 3rd gens have data from BOTH Navteq and TeleAtlas.

BTW, since people are talking about DVD blank brands and the brand that you see often doesn't mean squat, by itself. One should really identify it by the media code/ID (e.g. TYG03, YUDEN000T03, etc.). See http://www.digitalfaq.com/reviews/dvd-media.htm. The shortcut for getting here is www.nomorecoasters.com.
