    But the trend is the wrong way considering:

    November auto sales jump 17 percent as market gains strength
    As important as sales numbers are, market share of hybrids has been running under 3% and not in a good direction. I'm looking forward to the Dashboard report that will give us the numbers but these reports do not bode well.

    Yeah, it's kinda sad. News just loves to put Prius front and center when something goes wrong. This time being inverter coolant pump.

    Dealers are just crammed full of new Prius'. At least Japan is gobbling them up - I hope that wiki figure of 250k Prius' sold in 2010 through Oct. is accurate.

    What similar sized hatchback car is better than the Prius?

    Nothing.

    Hmmm. Prospective customers might be waiting for a larger discount on 2010's as inventories dwindle. Could also be that some could be anticipating a much improved 2011 model that isn't on the dealer's lot yet. Problem there is that the 11's aren't improved hardly at all. Might explain the sluggish numbers (even though slightly higher than last season).

    Im one of those people that waited two more months to see the deals at the end of the year. Just saw the December incentives and it's either $1500 or 0% for 60 months.

    I really wish they would give us the details on the V already. I'd like a slightly bigger prius

    Amazing that the price of fuel does to buying habits.

    Fuel is cheaper than a couple years ago in the US and less hybrids are now sold.

    Fuel has gone up by about 20% in a year over here and hybrids are selling like hotcakes. (still small fry numbers compared to the US - our yearly figure is about one month US sales).

    If Toyota's total sales were down 7.3%, but Prius sales were up 1.9%, then the Prius is growing 9.2% faster than Toyota's total, combined fleet.

    If you want to use these numbers below, then Prius sales were growing 23.4% faster than Toyota's total, combined fleet of passenger cars.

    "Toyota Division Toyota Division passenger cars recorded sales of 58,701 units, a decrease of 21.5 percent from last November. Toyota sales were led by Camry and Camry Hybrid, which posted combined monthly sales of 20,737 units. Corolla recorded sales of 16,202 units for the month. The Prius mid-size gas-electric hybrid reported sales of 10,224 units, up 1.9 percent over the year-ago month. "

    Does anyone know how total hybrid sales from all manufacturers compares to total passenger vehicle sales from all manufacturers?

    I think that it's the price of gas. How quickly people (want to) forget.

    Of course, if Toyota offers huge incentives on the 2010 Prius - they'll sell

    Using just the top passenger vehicles:

    As a percentage of Toyota sales, the Prius is holding its own but Toyota also sells SUVs:

    But far and away, the Toyota pickup trucks showed the best growth and not one of them is a hybrid to the best of my knowledge.

    Word is the 2011 Prius will have virtually no changes at all (just an interior color change IIRC).

    There will be an all new Prius V coming out mid next year as a 2012 MY.

    The regular 2011 Prius, I've been told will show up january/ February time frame.

    They think in the now. If they can get 15 gallons for under $50, they're ok. When they have to pay much over $50, they start whining.

    Some people just don't drive many miles at all < 5k / year. They drive whatever they want.

    We can (and have) debated the merit of plug-in and ordinary hybrids including the Volt. But each car has to stand before the buyer where a $25-35,000 question has be answered. We've also seen the history of mock-hybrids and thankfully, many are fading. But we're also seeing a focus from the gasser crowd on just "highway mileage."

    I appreciate the effort by HybridCars.com to include the diesels. Certainly they fill a gap between the 50 MPG Prius/Insight and the more modest hybrids, 35-40 MPG. But there is another group of small cars in the 30-35 MPG grouping and they are the ones that will tout "highway mileage" hoping to obscure their modest city performance.

    FYI,
    Followings are Japanese numbers in October 2010.

    Total passenger sales: 171,641 (including SUV and minivan as passenger cars in Japan)
    Total hybrid vehicle sales: 34,587

    34,587 / 171,641 -> 20.2% hybrid passenger vehicle penetration

    Anyway,
    Prius is going to be the annual best selling car in Japanese vehicle sales history.
    The previous record holder was Toyota Corolla (308k in 1990).
    In 1990, it was the peak selling year (total 7780k) in Japanese vehicle sales history.
    This year, we only see approx 5000k total, but Prius number is already 298k Jan-Nov.
