Democracy is the worst form of government except for all those others that have been tried.

The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public's money.

Proved him wrong. America hasn't gone under.

    Yet.

I guess it takes several days.

I don't know if he said that, but he was widely quoted as saying "We will bury you." This was a classic case of cultural ignorance on the part of the American translators and media. In Russian, "I will bury you" does not mean "I will kill you," but rather "I will outlive you."

He was wrong, as we saw, but he was not threatening to destroy us, he was claiming that his system was better and would outlast ours.

The comedian Dick Gregory once said something like: "Wouldn't it be funny if Khrushchev didn't really hate us; only his translators did?" Well, it turns out that he didn't hate us, but our own translators and media made it look like he did.

I think a thorough and unbiased review of history will reveal that the subprime/credit debacle was just business as usual, and that if the dollar amount was larger, it's just because the economy is larger and more globalized. And that the rich and powerful have never been held accountable, except on rare occasions when they swindle each other.

I also doubt he really wanted to "destroy" us, even with his comical hand-pounding-on-podium at the UN

He was far too busy sending his own people off to Gulags. The former USSR was very efficient at destroying internal opposition

There is a rich tradition in the former USSR of committing genocide against their own Comrades

Of course, the Moscow correspondent of The New York Times, Walter Duranty, not only defended Stalin's brutal reign of terror in the early 30's, he even received a Pulitzer Prize for his work of fiction.

Getting back to the thread topic itself, did the driver ever claim he was aware that he had hit someone? It is possible that his attention was diverted and by the time he looked up, he had already hit the biker and was headed into the culvert? This could make a difference to the prosecutor. I am not defending the guy...and I am a cyclist as well, but I can see the possibility.

Lindbergh was an open Nazi sympathizer. The kidnapping of his baby was a horrid tragedy. But he's not someone I'd ever take political or economic advice from.

I don't generally get into discussions about the Nazis- pro or con. The quote from 1913 is just one of a plethora of cautionary comments about the Federal Reserve cartel. It was not political advice, but rather a succinct musing of what was being perpetrated against our nation.

OK, let me see if I have this straight:

The Government is The Enemy and must be fought every inch of the way.

However, giant multinational corporations are our friends, have our best interest at heart, and must be protected at all costs.

Is that the gist of it?

No, I think the gist of it is that people are sheep, dumb as a box of rocks. Whether the "elite" the wealthy, a movie star, sports jock, etc, the sheeple allow them to literally get away with murder

Close. The Great-American-Dream is becoming a giant multi-national corporation by selling toaster cozies on e-Bay, so anything that puts a check on multi-nationals (or other obscenely wealthy entities) is perceived as putting that dream further out of reach.

Then I'd have quoted someone other than a Nazi sympathizer who knew nothing whatsoever about economics or politics, and whose only claim to fame is that he was a very accomplished airplane pilot.

That is definitely the view of the lunatic fringe of the libertarian movement. (Note: not all libertarians are lunatics. Most just want to be left alone. But there is a lunatic fringe that believes as you have summarized.)

Re: Rich Vail Fund Manager Hits Cyclist And Runs, Gets Off Because Charges Might "Jeopardize His Job

I am not sure why this is so confusing for people. Its relatively simple. When you speak to "the government", you are speaking to multinationals. This is not a government "of the people, for the people". It is an oligarchy. And I know that your post was referring to the Tea Party, but the Tea Party people that I have discussed issues with know the score very well and aren't in the back pocket of the GOP as leftist propaganda outlets would have you believe. The people that I have spoken with have no taste for either flavor in the cola wars.

If you really want to appeal to the larger electorate, the best message to hammer on is the "capitalism for them, socialism for us- privatize the profits, socialize the losses" angle. That much applies to Americans of all persuasions.

Well at least he didn't receive a Pulitzer for creative fictional writing about how wonderful things were in the former Soviet Union, a workers paradise police state where dissenters were shipped off to gulags

As a cyclist with a wife and two kids I have life insurance with a large payout. The only way to protect my family from financial disaster through such injustice. Because I know life in the eyes of justice ain't worth a damn.

The rules that apply to the rest of us don't seem to apply to the Catholic church either. Atleast not here in Phoenix. Apparently, the embarassment of getting caught molesting boys or running over someone and leaving them laying in the middle of the street like a dead dog is punishment enough. After all, they are Catholic. They must be good people.
