considering 2010 or 2010 new, will like to get GPS installed.

not sure how much dealers charge, is the 3rd party install cheaper, experience and suggestions will be very helpful. thanks,

I have a Garmin 1490T ($299) and I placed the suction cup holder on the small drivers side port window. It's still right in front of me but in no way blocks any part of my forward vision out of the windshield.

thanks for the info: do u think I should go for the factory installed? (don't know how much they charge) vs "best buy" type of install?

cost difference and professional look are important.

search priuschat for the flyaudio nav/dvd/cd/radio/back up camera unit, I got it for $850, it looks factory, and if you don't like the nav software you could change it like me

There is no question that the Garmin, Tom-Tom and other aftermarket navigation gear have some real advantages. They are cheaper, they are easier and cheaper to upgrade and some of them are better.

I have an excellent Garmin Nuvi that I use on my other car. Contrary to some posters on this site, I do not find it far superior to the factory unit in my Prius. I am sure that some of the available built in units are also very good.

I am not interested in having a unit stuck on my windshield or dashboard. Every day in the police report part of our local newspaper you read about someone having their window bashed in and GPS stolen. I bet that makes up for a big chunk of the money you might have saved, never mind the inconvenience of having the car repaired.

If you are not going to go with the factory unit, I would at least get another built in unit but I would have to have it professionally installed. I just take the portable unit in my other car down, put it in its case and hide it before I park the car. That is a pain.

I would be nice to have a Wiki Page with common questions. Every two months the same threads get started. Here is a picture I posted in a few threads regarding this topic.
