So, I'm new to this "going green" thingy. I had heard that if owners of hybrid "green" cars can recieve tax credits from the federal government when it comes time to file their annual taxes. I would really love to recieve some money back from the government. Anyone want to fill me in about this?

On another note, I thought that hybrid vehicles get to drive in the carpool lane during enforcement hours? What happened? I'm in CA. Has this changed?

Me too. Welcome aboard.:welcome: Aught to be fun.

I'm NOT a tax expert---and neither are 99.44% of the other folks out here. There's an about.com site out there that speaks to this.
Please note: This information is not provided as tax advice and should not be relied upon as such. Remember to consult your tax advisor IRS Web site for tax advice pertaining to the tax credit and the phaseout period.

My Take: (FWIW) Priuses don't get tax break. You'll just have to be content with saving money at the pump....
However (comma) my Commander-in-Chief just signed another zillion-page, zillion-dollar tax law, so this may have just changed. Buuut. I don't think so.

I do not know...what happened? I thought they could.
You'll have to ask someone out there on the left coast...
    Good Luck!!!

There was a maximum dollar amount for each manufacturer on hybrid tax credits and, unfortunately, that has long since passed for the Prius.

Car pool stickers were given out in 2005-2007 as an incentive to buy a Prius. Now everyone has a Prius , so no incentive needed. Stickers are long long gone. You can get a used Prius with stickers - they just extended them to Jul 1st , 2011.

Plug-In Prius (2012 model) will get a new type of sticker- for plug in's (program starts 1/2012).

    Electric cars always get stickers.

The federal hybrid credit ended long ago. According to the IRS:

"The credit for ... or new qualified hybrid passenger automobiles or light trucks manufactured by Toyota Motor Corporation will begin to phase out on Oct. 1, 2006."

"Beginning October 1, 2007, taxpayers who buy a Toyota hybrid cannot claim the related tax credit."

I got $1575 Federal Tax Credit (1/2 of the original amount) when I bought my Prius in Feb 2007. The tax credit was in the phase out period then and is long gone now.

The HOV lane stickers were capped at 80,000 (if I remember correctly) and I missed being eligible by about 2 months.

The tax credits offered by the government, for buying a hybrid vehicle, expired in 2007. There is no longer a tax credit for hybrid vehicles.
