The new Prius isn't the Prius V, it's the Prius v

Back in October a solid source told me that the new member of the Prius family would be named the "Prius V". It looks like he (and subsequent sources) were wrong: It's the "Prius v". The screenshot above was taken from the United States Patent and Trademark Office database and reflects how Toyota intends to use the "PRIUS V" trademark in the real world. So, there you go. A dumb name gets even more mind-numbingly dumber. 20 days till the big reveal... Source: US Patent and Trademark Office

So they're trying to trademark "v" as a vehicle name? That's a pathetic name to begin with buy why would you even need to trademark it? Who the hell else would name a car a "v"? I still hope it's just some sort of code-name for the upcoming model that will have a *real* name attached to it.

Did you know Toyota applied for a Trademark for "Prius" all the way back in July 1990. The "v" trademark is still in the application phase and they have applied for the first of 5 allowed extension's in time to file. Basically they are using this as a placeholder for the trademark. Weather they use it for the final product we will have to wait and see. Personally I am not "Moved Forward" by the "v".

That image is very confusing. It clearly shows "PRIUS v" on the top but then on the bottom where it is supposed to be the official lettering, it has two different fonts; a small capitalized font reading "PRIUS" and in a different larger font, it has a "V"/"v" and it is ambiguous whether it is capitalized or not. Why would a U.S. Patent form be so ambiguous and not specific???

Line 3 "Standard Characters Claimed is blank. This is where the description of the trademark would be. Toyota hasn't filled it in yet and has filed for a delay. The first line is just a title for the document and not the trademark.

I was really hoping the new line would be something more original ... like:

    The Prius prius.

Then after that, the Prius prius Prius.

See, that way there's no confusion. Oh ... and I also understand that George Forman's 7 sons are named George. There not ALL named George ... there's George, George, George, George, George, George, and ... um, I forgot the last one.

    Got it, Rokeby. Thanks!
I have to wonder how many other pieces are out there to complete this puzzle.

The problem is the whole automotive industry is running out of names. Geesh, Ford already marketed something they called "The Probe"....

Look at Scion...Xd, Xb, Tc...they are definently scrapping the bottom of the name barrel...

I don't like Prius v....but what else do you call it? The Rhino? The Toyota Voldermort? The Big Mother! Hybrid Hatchback Grande!

Would Prius wagon really be that unsellable?
At least at one time, Corolla CUV could be found on the Matrix window stick. How about Prius HUV (hybrid utiliy vehicle)?

    Ah, what's in a name?

No code-names here. But hold off on complaining about the name until you've seen the bigger picture. And you would be surprised about how the naming process works. There's many things to consider, like:

Right, we can make crazy names that aren't taken, but that won't help sell cars or build brands. BTW, don't laugh, Grande was on the list of candidates.

Maybe not unsellable, but may not help our cause. One reason, consumers who have seen the car in private clinics didn't use the word "wagon" to describe it... so we didn't see the need.

All that said, there's one more reason we chose the name we did... but no one (in THIS thread) has nailed it.

    Doug Coleman
    Prius Product Manager
    Toyota Motor Sales, USA

(PS. After the reveal, the short story of why the name was chosen will be out. Someday maybe I'll reveal the long, long story.)

Let me guess. V is for 5 and this is the 5th Prius body style. 1. Japan only. 2, 3, and 4. US Gen 1, 2, and 3 as we call them. or are you counting the PHEV (PIP?) as model 4? and numbering for US only?
