Thanks to PriusChat I got the reverse beep on my Gen III 2010 shut off (or rather, changed to a short single beep to indicate that I've shifted). Days after I bought my Prius two months ago, I went back to dealer and asked them about it and they told me that they could only change it to one long (continuous) tone instead of a series of beeps. Who wants that? But when I read here on PriusChat that no, they can change it to a single brief tone, and that dealers are just misinformed, I went back to my dealer and told them they were wrong. They checked into it and lo and behold, they changed it for me. Single tone! Ahhhhhh! Quiet back ups. Woo hoo! Thanks PRIUSCHAT!!!

I tried to get it changed when I purchased my car, they told me it couldn't be changed at first. After reading the manual, I went back and they told me it could be changed for $300 per adjustment. Needless to say, I was pissed.

Are you saying $300.00 dollars here or $3.00 per. This is a 2 minute job that can be done in the parking lot. Don't let this stealer dealer get away with it...report him to Toyota...

Please post the name of the dealer who did that for you, for the benefit of others in your area. As you have seen from other posts here, not all dealers are competent enough to do the job, and not all the ones who can, are ethical enough to do it for a fair price.

My dealer (Palm Beach Toyota) couldn't make the change - they even went to PriusChat and found the instructions for the Gen II, which didn't work on my Gen III. But somebody here had posted that they were able to get it done at Al Hendrickson Toyota in Pompano, so I took mine there and they did it free with my normal service.

And I agree with you 100% on your feelings about getting rid of that $&#^*# beeping.

I bought my Prius on Monday night and a condition of sale was that the beep be changed to 1 short beep. However, since I got them down so low on price, they said they wouldn't do it for free, I said fine. As I left the dealership that night, I told the salesman it would be nice if the beep was changed when I come in to pick up the car tomorrow. He said he would see what he could do. And when I returned on Tuesday, the beep had been changed.

You can also do this yourself with a ScanGauge II; and also silence the seat belt beeps (other than those 5-6 at startup). No need to go back and forth with a recalcitrant or over-charging service department. Plus a lot of other data input info that you can get from your OBDI port. @ $145 at Amazon shipped. Search about the gauge..it's added a whole different dimenson to my Prius experience.

Too bad one can't turn off the beeps without the dealer or a ScanGuage II. I was thinking of getting that device and perhaps this will tip me over the edge to get one...

Update: I just got mine done. I went to the dealer to pick up our plates. NY plates but dealer is in NJ. Prestige Toyota in Ramsey, NJ has an entirely separate location for service and parts. It is half a block from my fiancee's work. So since I dropped her off I went to the dealer and dealer wasnt open yet. (8:30 am, they open at 9am)

So I drove back and went to service to get the beeping changed.

I told the receptionist and the Service rep the same thing.

"I just bought this car and I want to have something RESET on my prius."

The Service rep asked what I needed to be reset.

I then explained that the manual states that the reverse beeping and seatbelt reminder beeping can be reset to just 1 beep. And off respectively to the seatbelt.

He asked where in the manual is says that.

    Immediately I said "Page 592 section 6-2"

he laughed that I memorized it and said he can't wait to see the mechanic come back saying they cant do it and he will tell them the page number of the manual to disprove them.

I waited about 45 mins and it was done. They even washed my car. No charge. But then again I have the uber-extended warranty 8y/100k miles.

But I think wording and poise makes a difference. I purposely said "reset" as if something had gone wrong. Rather than "I want to change something"

    Oh no, not $3.00.

$300.00 - plus shop charges and taxes

Three HUNDRED dollars to change ONE option. ONE.

Already reported. Now when I get my routine maintenance done, I get a dirty car, and have to retrieve it from the lot... no more getting the car for me, or running it through the car wash.

Is it out of the question to take your car to another dealer.
One that wants your business. ???

Let us know what if anything you hear back from Toyota

Out of the question, no. I am certainly limited on my options, as my selling dealership seems determined for me never to darken their doorstep if possible, and Burnsville Toyota basically told me that since I didn't purchase my car from them, they couldn't be bothered to service it

I know there is at least one more dealership I know of, but they are a bit out of my way (Minnetonka). You'd think dealerships would WANT you to like them?

I'd send the general manager and perhaps the owner of Burnsville Toyota a note along with a hyperlink to this page.
They're obviously not looking at the long game here.

It's remarkable what we have to go through on this. I bought my Prius from Superior Toyota, Overland Park, KS (it's a Hendrick dealer). I didn't pay for the fix, but I was prepared to go to the mat if they had wanted me to, especially as my sale was just hours old when asked them the first time around if they could do it (and they said they couldn't). I watched them do it with a little computer, took a few minutes. It's softened me a bit to this dealership.

Who are you referring to? Me? Or someone else on the thread. My dealer is Walser Toyota in Bloomington, MN in case it was me you were asking this of.

Your dealer is riping you off. Let the service manager know your displeasure with his service....ask if he can make it right. If not....move up the chain until you get it resolved.....this should be a free service, as many of us have experienced...

This is the worst thing about the Prius IMO. I am still regretting not having asked to have it taken off when I bought the vehicle. I've not gone back since to ask about it, unfortunately.
