I recently installed a pair of SMD LEDs (25 ct.) In my t ailight housings and for some reason only the top 2 LEDs are bright. All of the LEDs on the side are very dim. I was freezing when I installed them so I don't remember if all of the LEDs were bright to begin with and they dimmed over the course of a week. I think I would have noticed the uneven illumination when I first installed them if that was the case.

The housing for the bulb is quite small so could heat have caused this problem despite outside temps ranging from 37°-50°?

I purchased the bulbs from Autoillumination.com.

I'll try to get pictures today to illustrate the issue.

What do you mean by 25 ct? 25 SMDs per bulb?!? What color bulbs are u using?

I was thinking of buying 2 red bulbs (9 SMD) from superbrightleds.com, for my tailights. I've compared the difference using only a 5 SMD (red) and it's slghtly brighter/redder, so I imagine 9 is plenty.

Aye, 25 SMDs per bulb. I used the red ones because the housing is red. I think 9 would work well if they all light up properly. Sorry I didn't post the link to the exact bulbs. It'shard to jump between pages on my phone. I'm still a smartphone noob.

I can't figure out how to post links with a phone but if you are interested in the bulbs they are 194 SMT (not SMDs) 25 Tower III found on autoiluminations.com.

Lol I'm on my phone too, I'll check it out when I can. I'm curious to know the 25 arrangement, I can't get over how many that is!

I'm not sure what the dif between a smt and smd is, if there is one. You ought to try superbrightleds, I can vouch for their product. Their 9 SMD goes for $13 a piece. Yeah kinda pricey. That's why I'm holding off. Once I get my license plate bulbs in, I may change my mind.

    K I found it- it's autolumination BTW.

Looks like 2 adjacent half bright smts (x4 vertically) per side, that may be the problem. There's jus too many small bulbs.

    Oops!

mine have 6 bulbs per side and one on top. Maybe it is that they are too small but it still doesn't seem right.

    you're correct, 6 bulbs per side (6 x 4= 24 +1 = 25) duh.

If you're looking for alternatives and don't mind splurging, you should try the superbrightleds bulb, and let us know. The construction is really good.

I've used bulbs from them in the past and generally had good results except for some multi-LED daytime running lamps I tried to use on my GMC truck. Those failed numerous times.

Maybe I'll try the company again. :)

Usually the issue has to do with shared voltage if its 2 contacts on the valve ballest

Ok, I'm an idiot. Apparently the lights only dim like that when the car is off an either the trunk or door is open. When the car is running, the lights are all the same intensity.

I didnt know that either. So is the difference noticeable with the LEDs? You should still post pictures. I'd love to see.

It is very noticeable. I took pics but I can't figure out how to upload them. It automatically defaults to my sd card but the pics are stored on the phone. Grr I hate not having my computer. I even put them on facebook but I can't copy urls. Lol

The first pic is with the car off. The second is with the car on and the third is with the bulb in the housing and the car on. It wasn't dark yet so the lights appear dim.

I bought some bulbs from autolumination.com for the tail lights (red running lights). They were the EXACT same ones, the 25/26 LED tower ones, man were they bright red, they were great for about a week or two.

They overheated and melted and the company wouldn't do anything for me. They insisted that something else near the bulb created the heat and wouldn't stand behind their product.

I would not deal with that company again. In my opinion they suck.

I guess I should also state that I bought two more bulbs for the interior at the same time and haven't had problems with them. But they're only on for less than 2 minutes per day.

Well, don't purchase these bulbs for your taillights!

Mine just went into meltdown mode. I was driving down the highway and smelled electronics melting and sure enough it was the new LEDs. They didn't even last a week. :(

I concur with the above conclusion about autolumination. Also, they appear to be the same as superbrightbulbs.com as well. I've had issues with essentially EVERY LED bulb I've gotten from them. I've heard superbrightleds.com is supposed to be good. Actually, I had 5 LED bulbs from them in my Harley last year and never had a problem with them. I traded in and didn't keep the LEDs because I don't feel like doing that change with the new Harley.

Another site I'm giving a try is http://www.besthongkong.com/ but they seem to be having server issues at the moment. I have to pick up the bulbs from them from the post office this week (signature required). I've only been using the bulbs for my front parking lights, and have gone through 5 of them so far in the past year. Hopefully this place is better!

Yikes, thanks for the warnings guys. That makes me nervous to even try superbrightleds for my tails. I wonder why they burnt out/melted so quickly. I hope the license plate LEDs don't suffer the same way too.

BTW F8L, is that a picture of a wire and base literally mean that the bulbs melted/disintigrated???

Superbrightleds was OK for me. It's superbrightbulbs/autolumination that everyone seems to be having issues with. Give it a shot, get 2 bulbs and do a weekly walk behind to monitor them (should be doing this anyway, really).

I know, 2 companies with similar names creates a little confusion.
