Took our Prius in for the Coolant Pump Recall, they also did the Pedal Recall without my permission!

I had previously declined the pedal recall work, as I didn't want our gas pedal arm to be shortened for no reason. So I made an appointment for last Sunday for the Coolant Pump recall to be done and when I went to pick it up, the service advisor said they did "the recalls" and I told him I had not been notified that they were going to do the pedal recall, and that I had not approved that work. I had him note it on my paperwork "Customer did not approve pedal recall" and told him if I was not happy with the change I'd want them to put it back the way it was. Our 07 Prius was made in Japan and wasn't part of the problem, we have had Zero problems with this car anyway.

Anyone have this happen and what did you do? What should I do? I don't know if I can really do Anything at all, which is depressing. I thought about going to the BBB, but for what? The damage has been done, and I don't think it is reversible (in other words, I don't think they will be able to order the original part from Japan and reinstall it).

    Comments welcome.

My gas pedal was trimmed w/o them even asking me when I took my Prius in for something else. I only found out after the fact and was also initially unhappy.

Correct in that Japanese made Toyotas don't use the ill-fated CTS pedals which might stick and was remedied via insertion of a metal shim. However, IIRC, the trimming of the pedal was to reduce chance of pedal entrapment.

I was afraid that they'd do a crude job of mawing off the pedal but that wasn't the case. It was trimmed very well and doesn't bother me at all nor does it affect drivability, for me. The big question for you is "does it affect drivability for you?"

The dealer did say that it's Toyota policy that if I'm not satisfied, they can order a new pedal assembly for me. I'd assume that it'd be w/the bottom already shortened/trimmed. I didn't bother.

It's all quite ridiculous. I just deleted a photo off my computer this afternoon showing the stock gas pedal with 2" clearance all around, fully depressed to floor.

It doesn't affect the feel of the gas pedal much, and if put on properly, it should work fine. At least you won't have any outstanding recalls.

When I had coolant pump replaced, I let them cut the pedal off. They did a good job and it looks natural. It hasn't affected driving at all. I'm happy. They even washed and vacuumed the car. And it wasn't even the dealer that sold me the car.

So, just out of curiosity, what did you use the bottom 1/8" of the pedal and the 2 corners that were cut off for before the recall was done?
If they hadn't told me they'd done the pedal recall I'd never even have noticed, but then my foot covers the whole pedal and never even touches the bottom edge.

Unfortunately, the shaved off pedal looks klutzy. I asked them to replace it with the Toyota-manufactured replacement part which wasn't much better. I don't feel any difference in the pedal but it looks unfinished compared to the original.

How about providing a photo of the new accelerator pedal?
