That'll only apply to the sale of new vehicles and Toyota has already been there (stopped selling certain Lexus models for a while until a fix is available). That'd be a good thing, not a danger. The rest would just get recalled and driven around without problems (as it's been in the last few months) until a fix becomes available.

LaHood retracted his statement but obviously not until after the press got hold of it. Think about it. It's obviously a witch hunt by our own government. Lahood would never have said "Stop driving your GM until it's fixed" lest the government wants to spend another $900 billion bailing out the U.S. auto industry again. And you wonder why there are so many complaints with Toyota a la the Pepsi scare?

Two problems with this lawsuit. 1) The Prius and other Toyota vehicles are already equipped with an override system that kills the engine if the brake and gas are deployed simultaneously and 2) If NHTSA can't prove SUA, what makes you think the insurance companies can do it in a court of law?

Wrong, if the electronic control systems in Toyotas have an inherent flaw, all of the cars will be pulled off the road until a fix can be applied. Used, new, doesn't matter. They pose a risk to the owner, passengers, other drivers, pedestrians etc.

Reading the news release you can obviously sense that our government is extremely frustrated with the lack of cooperation from Toyota. Witch hunt or not, Toyota put themselves in this position because they did not do the right thing at the right time. When enough people get killed or complain, our government takes action. That's just the way it is.

"If" NASA can't prove unintended acceleration Toyota's case will be much stronger. But the study isn't finished. As of August they've only tested 58 cars out of 3,000 complaints. Their silence at this point leads me to believe they've found problems and are working with Toyota to apply a fix so that when all of the cars are recalled they can do it in a timely manner.

Lawyers did it with silicone breast implants, and we now know there is absolutely no science to back up the claim -- a real comfort to the stockholders of the companies put out of business.

The courts are not a great place for determining scientific merit.

It's POSSIBLE that the car was at fault but given how many vast numbers of people do in fact hit the throttle instead of gas it's VERY likely that he did that, too. Youtube is packed to the brim of people hitting gas instead of brakes.

    Toyota Jeep no doubt.
This happened at a shop a few houses from where I lived 22 years ago.
Mitubishi Colt went through the shop window, the shop owner switched off the engine. The driver had their foot flat on the accelerator.

LOL. Do you have a source or did you pull that out of your a$$?

You really think that given the negative or inconclusive results from the 58 cars? So now they're working silently instead of informing the owners or as you said "pulling all the cars off the road" as they're so dangerous?

Yeah, thats funny. They found something so serious, dangerous and deadly they aren't saying a word. Instead of speculating, how about just waiting until they release their report?

Same source as you got this statemtent:

No more so than other snake-oil self-serving organizations. Any time money is involved, you can find people willing to skew data and torture the truth to make a buck. The linked page is a prime example, so no, those do not qualify as science by my definition.

No, I didn't pull that out of my a$$. My source is as follows: Lexus Recall Information

Now, cite the source of your statement that "all of the cars will be pulled off the road until a fix can be applied."

An article in today's LA Times Toyota sudden-acceleration lawsuits focus on lack of brake override - Los Angeles Times

Obviously unable to prove their SUA case, the lawyers have shifted to suing over the lack of brake override in earlier years Toyota vehicles that they argue could have prevented SUA, but it doesn't explain the numerous SUA complaints in the Prius given that this brake override has existed even in the Gen II.

The longer article in the printed LA Times also states that a comprehensive report by NASA on the causes of SUA is expected early this year.

Your example has nothing to do with what is currently happening. That was a voluntary recall, Lexus can do whatever they want in those situations.

A government mandated recall would be completely different. And if the engine control system is deemed a safety risk it will be an unprecedented situation. Unfortunate, but unprecedented.
