I have a Prius III made in late Jan. 2010. Streaming audio thru Bluetooth worked fine with my IPhone 3.0S ...but does not work with my new IPhone4. A telephone call does work thru Bluetooth ...but not audio content as music or recorded books. Also, the Bluetooth did not recognize my IPhone4 as multimedia device....but just as headset. Is there a software fix from Toyota yet for this? Apparently the new IPhone4 has a protocol change in it's audio . Interestingly, my wife's IPhone3 does not now steam audio thru Bluetooth now that she has upgraded her software to the new 4.01 op system either( it did before the software upgrade)....and I saw another IPhone4 owner yesterday that had the same problem with his Toyota. Audio DOES work thru the aux plug.

Re: IPhone4 and and audio streaming thru Bluetooth problem

We paired a friend's iPhone 4 (with the latest OS) with my Prius yesterday, following the nav manual instructions. We first paired the phone BT, then the audio BT (the owner's manual says to in big bold font).

I'd suggest deleting existing phone and audio BT profiles, then proceed with the iPhone 4.

A question for you--with your iPhone 3, were you able to skip tracks forward and backward using the steering wheel controls? We could not.

I could not get my iPhone 3 to coexist with Prius at all - but the battery life on the phone was so bad I didn't try that hard. The iPhone 4 worked the first time, but I can't control it from the car. There was some kind of a setting but I haven't tried toggling it yet. Whatever was playing before picks up where it left off.

The sound quality is really, really good. I was amazed.

Agreed--the sound quality was surprisingly good, especially after adjusting the bass & treble (you need to adjust for each audio input).

The iPhone 4 does many things well--too bad being a phone isn't one of them. ;)

No iPhone will work with the steering wheel controls at this point. The iPhone OS only supports AVRCP 1.0, so it only supports Play/Pause (on the screen). The rumor is that iOS 4.1, currently in beta testing, supports a later version, so we'll be able to see the currently playing track, and skip forwards and backwards.

    I can't wait!

Well, maybe I can. I hardly ever drive, I tend to bicycle almost all the time.

I hope you are correct about iOS 4.1! My wife has an iPhone 3G running iOS 3.1.3 (not upgrading due to slowness of a 3G and iOS 4.X on that model phone) and I have an iPhone 3GS running iOS 4.0.1 and they both work fine with our Prius V. It would be very nice to get better playback functionality on the BT screen of the Prius.

Re: IPhone4 and and audio streaming thru Bluetooth problem

If all else fails, delete the profile on the car and try pairing again. Make sure the audio is connected. Push the AUX button until BT is shown, and if there's no sound, push audio and see if there's a connect button on the screen. Push connect on the screen if it's there.

I think it can only be paired as a phone (the car acts as a hands-free unit), or as an iPod (the car acts as a music player using A2DP, and you can pause audio), but not both at the same time. It's also why the iPhone has to be paired as a phone and as and audio source.

With the next OS4 release (4.1) they should enable AVRCP 1.3 on the phone, so you can see track info and skip ahead/back. The car supports this, the iPhone does not (yet).

I just love it when somebody posts "information" which is...incorrect...and only further confuses things.

Re: IPhone4 and and audio streaming thru Bluetooth problem

Actually, cit1991 was *mostly* correct... You can press the Aux button on the side of the display to get to either the Bluetooth or Aux panes of the audio system. (Or you can press Audio and then use the touchscreen to select BT, if it isn't already.) And the second part was describing how to connect to an already-paired phone, not how to pair a new phone (I've seen it sometimes fail to connect too, necessitating a manual push of the Connect button).

No defense for the last part though, unless you interpret it as "you can't listen to music while you're on the phone at the same time." ;)

Re: IPhone4 and and audio streaming thru Bluetooth problem

Sucks to hear the iphones dont work with the Prius. My Tilt 2 running Windows Mobile 6.5.5 works flawlessly. When I get into the car and start it up, the BT automatically pairs the phone, the audio, and the HTC media player. It automatically switch the HTC Sense from home tab to music tab and starts playing the music. It shows the ID tag on the screen. The pause , track up and down works too. When a call comes in, it pauses the player and switch to phone. Once the call ends, it switches back to the player and unpauses it. When I shut the car off, it automatically pauses the music player though it doesn't switch back to the home tab though. Since the the audio is also paired, I can make 3G skype calls or watch/listen to youtube. I can also use other media players (Yes, it multitasks multiple media players at once. It's annoying sometimes so I have to stop one of the player) Here's something I found annoying, not sure if it happens on the iphone. If I use generic media player as aux input through BT and I shut the car off, the audio gets routed back to the phone's speaker and my pocket starts blaring music kind of like unpluging the headphone jack.

Re: IPhone4 and and audio streaming thru Bluetooth problem

The only problem I have with my iPhone 4 is that iOS4 still doesn't support the full implementation of AVRCP, so I can't skip tracks forward and backwards. But it connects automatically when I start up the car, plays just fine, and if a call comes in it pauses the music and switches to the call, switching back to the music when I'm done. Which is how it worked with the 3GS and the 3G too for that matter.

Yes, Apple is several Blue Tooth versions behind what is available. Perhaps that will be addressed in iOS4.1, perhaps not; we'll see. BMW say that they will soon have a user interface that displays the iPhone's iPod interface on their cars' Nav screens, so that seems do-able by Toyota if they choose to do so.

Using the Prius V's USB connector with my iPhone 3GS (iOS4.0), I can display the song titles, and jump forward or back in the list via the steering wheel buttons. When a telephone call is made by me, or one comes in, the songs' volume is muted and the 'phone application takes over. The song resumes upon completing the call.

If you do not have a USB connection in your car, that may be something that you might like to explore.

According to some of the beta testers that I've talked to it has been addressed in the current beta of iOS4.1. Whether or not it will make it into the final who knows. :)

BT audio works great on my iPhone4. I did have to add it both as a phone and a portable player separately but once done it works very well. Also I had to delete the iPhone3G I had in there first.

I have had an odd problem start up with my 3G and and iOS 4.01. Sometimes when I plug my iPhone into my USB port on my Prius, the iPod will be playing, but no sound from the Speakers, even though it says it is playing on the HU Screen. I have to unplug and replug in the iPhone, which usually gets it to start playing again. And, it is fussy about listing the playlists on the screen...either a delay, or will have to unplug and replug, and sometimes even Stop & Restart the car!

I hope there are software updates on both the Prius and the iPhone, but I won't hold my breath on Toyota having any Head Unit software upgrades.

    Hello
I just purchased Gen 3 Prius III with JBL/BT, paired my Iphone4 (ios 4.2.1) with No issues and call quality is Good...
    2 Questions:

1 i wasnt able to pair my iphnone with BT Audio... any inputs... it just doesnt want to do it...
2 this may not be the right forum, but how do i transfer my iPhone4 PhoneBook to Prius BT Database... that way i can just dial by Name rather than number and i dont want to setup manually..

    thanks.

Not the Prius will only hold a limited number of contacts - 1000 I believe and you can't sync only a specific group vs all of them.
