People who collect social security and unemployment, why can't this be the main pool for jury duty?

Nevada invalidates your drivers license if you don't show up for jury duty. This solves the OP's problem. Those people so important that they never drive themselves (Home, James) do not have to be on juries.

I was called for jury duty twice and excused both times. The first time because I was living in Mexico, and the second time because I was no longer a resident of the state where I was being called (North Dakota).

I like that. Last time I went in for jury duty about 1/2 of the people called didn't show up.

I've been called 4 times and ended up on the jury 3 times (1 guilty, 2 not guilty). I find it quite worthwhile, if not essential. Let me make my view quite clear. If it were not for the jury, our justice system would be completely defective. For the prosecutors and defenders it's all about "winning". For the vast jury members plucked out of a somewhat responsible pool, it's about making the "right" decision.

Interestingly, the one guilty was well off and the 2 not guilty verdicts were not so well off.

i hear you. my wife just got called for fereral jury duty. she has to be available for a 3 week period. she may never serve, or she could serve for weeks or months. either way, she can't make any commitment for the 3 week period or any time after until she knows what is going to happen. and if she does serve, she has to drive an hour in rush hour to get there at 8 a.m.. it's very disruptive to one's life, and i don't know anyone who doesn't complain about it, but i havn't seen a better alternative.

I've made it all the way to jury duty once.

It was actually quite interesting. They made me the jury foreman.

It was a one-day thing, as we managed to get the verdict out by 5pm! :thumb:

And, my job paid me for doing my civic duty, as well. So, I didn't lose anything.

Being self employed, the one time that I was empaneled as a juror cost me about $6,000 the very first day. A had a very important business meeting scheduled, but it turned out that the trial started immediately. I missed the meeting.

It was a criminal trial that lasted many days. It took three days just for deliberation. That time cost me thousands more in non-billable time.

Even with the financial hit, I'm not complaining. I consider it my civic duty to serve when called. I have little sympathy for people that try to get off because they don't like the inconvenience.

I did get off once when I had dysentery. For some reason, my running to the bathroom every few minutes didn't fit well with the court schedule. Perhaps the threat of contracting a highly drug resistant disease helped too. :D

I was made foreman on my second jury. We were unable to reach a verdict by 5 pm. But we started promptly the next morning and were almost done before the judge even arrived to command us to continue. When we called the bailiff shortly thereafter, it took longer to collect the defendant and lawyers than it had taken us to finish our deliberations.

Strange, but evey time I have been called, they ask what I do, who I work for.......and then they get rid of me!

Yeh, every unemployed person is a "Springer moron." How adult of you to put it that way. And while you're at it, why don't you add a few more exclamation points and emoticons?

I think some of the posters here, including the OP, are implying certain things about folks who receive UI.

    Your implications are inaccurate.

Because it's called humour. The emoticons are to show that he's not being serious. Not being serious and humour go together.

Obviously nobody thinks that unemployed people are ALL like the fools who decide to show their faces on Springer (esp in these hard times). Equally humour and hard times go together.

Re: People who collect social security and unemployment, why can't this be the main pool for jury du

My most memorable Jury duty, we convicted on 6 counts of sexual seduction of a minor and aquited on 2 counts of child pornography. The defendant was already serving time for DWI manslaughter. The female jurors hated the male jurors, the male jurors hated the female jurors, we all hated the judge, the lawyers, the 'victims' the witnesses, the police, and the defendant.

Nevada law held that you are guilty even if she lied to you about her age, which one 'victim' did. (He was picking her up at Junior high school, it was not rocket science to guess she was under age) Another 'victim' already had a child by another man (still under age) by the time of the trial. Nevada also required actual images to convict on child porn, it is not enough to pose children and aim the camera. The Police let the defendant's relatives cart his mobile home across state lines so lost 'the scene of the crime' and could not search for film. (They also let the 'victims' talk privately before giving testimony)

The lawyer's did not let the defendant give any testimony, their only defense was to bad mouth the 'victims'. The DA had to rely on the law more than the facts as the police had lost all the evidence, but you can't convict without evidence.

Once done, I felt my life was boring compared to the defendant, and boring was a good thing.

I had never been selected for jury duty until 2010, when I was selected. My employer was cool with it, it was an interesting experience. Ultimately was not selected to sit on the jury - but the experience was a new one. Personally, I didn't mind so much - it gave me an excuse to do something different for a few days. I got paid more for the milage I drove than the actual time served.

Oh, you mean the people that worked hard paying for the benefits for those collecting them when they were working?

And, you should learn to respect you elders because they are older AND wiser.
