You'll have to figure out how to vent that battery to the hose in the Prius.
You will probably need post adapters or do what "eLearnaid" does. A new -ve cable and a +ve post connector with a stud. They sell the "kit" complete with vent kit for $20. The vent kit -may- be adaptable to this battery. I don't see a A-Hr spec for it. "Cold cranking capacity" is meaningless in Prius service.

I believe it's an AGM SEALED BATTERY with no venting required??
The measurements are perfect & I like the 8 year warranty:cheer2:

Besides having to change the terminal connectors and figure out the battery venting, make sure that the battery polarity is correct: you need the positive terminal to be on the left side, when the battery is facing you with the terminals on the side closest to you.

The Duralast is Right hand positive, the Prius needs left hand positive. And the dimensions are different from the Optima yellow top. The yellow top is L- 9 5/16" W - 5 1/16" and H - 8 15/16" while the Duralast is L - 7.5 W - 5 and H - 6.5

The Duralast is smaller in size, fits in the box just fine, it's 5 pounds lighter, all you need to do is turn it around and it's right hand positive & you get an 8 year warranty & only $89.00
Yes you would need to modify mounting it, just like you need to modify the Optima.
Prius owners need more options...not just just the Optima

It's not a good idea to use a battery with incorrect terminal polarity. The terminals will be right next to the fender. In the event that your car is hit in the right rear fender, the battery may short to the fender causing a significant fire and safety hazard.

If that risk is worth your saving $50 (compared to buying the correct battery for $139 MSRP) then go for it.

Good point! IIRC the "yellow top" battery with the post adapters has the same problem.

Actually the Optima Battery can be purchased with either LH Positive (D51) or RH Positive (D51R). You want LH positive for the Prius.

I think I have found a LifeLine AGM battery (GPL-U1T)
Lifeline Batteries - Marine & RV Deep Cycle Batteries
that will work for the Prius with the addition of the proper terminal adapters (JIS posts with 6mm studs). The terminal adapters are available from West Coast Batteries

Odyssey Battery hold downs and accessories JIS Terminals

I may go this route and I am getting near the time to replace the original 12V. Best online price for the Lifeline is ~$130 incl shipping + 12.95 for the terminals.

I found another possible AGM battery that is a little larger than the Lifeline battery, but still smaller than the Optima:

Sun Xtender Solar Batteries - Photovoltaic Battery

The Sunxtender and the Lifeline are both made by the same manufacturer, Concorde Battery. The PVX-420T is a taller version of the GPL-U1T (the PVX-340T is the same size as the GPL-U1T).

    In terms of Amp-Hr ratings:

    GPL-U1T (33Ah @C/20) < Optima D51(38Ah @C/20) < PVX-420T (42Ah @C/24)

that is because the weight of each respectively:

    24 lb (GPL-U1T) < 26 lb (D51) < 30 lb (PVX-420T)

Since they are all AGM construction, the difference in weight is primarily the amount of Pb contained in each; more Pb = more Amp-Hr.

Not if you buy the correct Optima Yellowtop battery. Mine sits in the well with the terminals inboard.

Regardless of terminal placement and battery type, -ALL- lead acid batteries WILL vent if "something bad" happens. You have NO control of if or when it will. So you do need to configure venting to the tube supplied in the Prius. All lead acid batteries will have a vent hole somewhere on the case. You just have to find it/them. If they didn't they would be bombs! Sometimes the vent hole is under a label.

I dug up where I got the (wrong) impression from:
    Prius 12V swap
He did have the correct orientation and the problem was actually the negative post on the back wall so I suppose it is much less a potential hazard. Sorry for my bad memory. :) Link to Hobbit's picture here:

    You have a Starter Battery.
There's actually 2 version of the 8AMU1R Miata Battery. Deka(AGM) version is grayish and has fins. Also comes with vent connection. Johnson Control(Wet) version is all black.

If you want the Deka ones, find Deka dealer.
