Yesterday while exercising on the treadmill I watched the movie Tank Girl via streaming media (NetFlix via my new Roku player). I'm not sure if this movie was made from a comic book, or just made to appear as though it was from a comic book. It's interspersed with comic book style drawings, but it's a live movie, not animated.

This is one of those rare movies that's so silly, so ridiculous, so utterly implausible, that it's a work of genius. By implausible I don't mean impossible the way fantasy is impossible; I mean that even given the premise of the movie nobody would actually behave that way. The premise is that a comet has hit the Earth and there's hardly any water and it never rains and most of the world is controlled by the evil Water and Power Company. There are marauding "Rippers," half man, half kangaroo, bred to be soldiers, and then turned loose when the war was over and there was no use for them any more. The heroine is a fast-talking hard-nice person who steals a tank from the Water and Power Company when the latter attacks the tiny community where she lives and kidnaps a little girl.

Since I'm bored right now. I just thought I'd post this and alert everyone to a fun little gem of a movie.

Yeah, it's based on a comic series.

    Hi Daniel,

Yes the movie was made from a comic book. But it was also widely panned by the movie critics when it came out. Oh, I am not so sure she kidnapped the little girl, but rescued her. Tank Girl has been on broadcast terrestrial HD here a few times over the last couple of years...

Wasn't the Tank Girl movie meant as a 'right on' type, politically correct substitute for Mad Max, yet as she wasn't foxy and actually quite scary, the film flopped?

Blimey, it cost $25m to make and took $4! Somebody somewhere was sacked and probably not working in that industry anymore!

    Tony: Thanks for the info.

Donee: The Water and Power Company kidnaps the little girl. They try to make a child prostitute out of her. Tank Girl, Jet Girl, and the kangaroo men rescue her. Twice, since they stop for a long musical interlude which allows W&P to grab her a second time. Totally silly. Who rescues someone, then goes into a long song and dance number, giving the bad guys a chance to attack again? But of course that's part of the charm of the movie.

Grumpy: You may be right about the intentions of the movie makers. I wouldn't know. But I'd never in a million years characterize Tank Girl as a politically correct Mad Max. On the contrary, if anything it's a total spoof of Mad Max. The most predominant characteristic of Tank Girl is not its political correctness, but its utter silliness.

Maybe Tank Girl's kick-nice person style was ahead of its time. Jet Girl was really hot. And the kangaroo men were a dead giveaway that you were not supposed to take the movie seriously. Especially the stupid one who "used to be a dog" but was so well-behaved that he was promoted to human before being turned into a half kangaroo.

Never saw the movie (everyone said "stay away!"), but the comic book was great. I suggest you seek them out.

Our teenage niece brought the movie DVD over to watch during a family get together at Christmas a few years ago. If you accept it as a spoof and watch the movie for free with a couple of bright teenagers explaining it to their 80 year old grandmother, it's a fun movie. If you paid full price to see it in a regular theater and were looking for serious entertainment you would be disappointed.

I am not interested in comic books. The movie was a fun romp. As for paying "full price" in a theater, I'm not sure any movie is worth that.

I just watched Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World. Now THAT is a great graphic-novel-to-movie movie.

Okay. It gets good reviews on NetFlix. I've added it to my queue.

Okay. I've put it on my NetFlix queue and moved it to the top. I love looking at Cameron Diaz. I watched The Mask again recently. Damn, she's hot!
