I thought it would be fun to discuss something we all do multipal times a day, EAT. The question is, what do you eat, or not eat?
So I went to the web for catigories, because I know there are many differant labels for differant diets. I hope this pole gives enough options that everyone can participate.
Each option is discribed in detail below:
    1. Pescatarian (also spelled pescetarian)

The word “pescatarian†is occasionally used to describe those who abstain from eating all meat and animal flesh with the exception of fish. Although the word is not commonly used, more and more people are adopting this kind of diet, usually for health reasons or as a stepping stone to a fully vegetarian diet.

    2. Flexitarian/Semi-vegetarian

You don’t have to be vegetarian to love vegetarian food! “Flexitarian†is a term recently coined to describe those who eat a mostly vegetarian diet, but occasionally eat meat.

    3. Vegetarian (Lacto-ovo- vegetarian)

When most people think of vegetarians, they think of lacto-ovo-vegetarians. People who do not eat beef, pork, poultry, fish, shellfish or animal flesh of any kind, but do eat eggs and dairy products are lacto-ovo vegetarians (“lacto†comes from the Latin for milk, and “ovo†for egg).
Lacto-vegetarian is used to describe a vegetarian who does not eat eggs, but does eat dairy products.
Ovo-vegetarian refers to people who do not eat meat or dairy products but do eat eggs.
    4. Vegan

Vegans do not eat meat of any kind and also do not eat eggs, dairy products, or processed foods containing these or other animal-derived ingredients such as gelatin. Many vegans also refrain from eating foods that are made using animal products that may not contain animal products in the finished process, such as sugar and some wines. There is some debate as to whether certain foods, such as honey, fit into a vegan diet.
    5. Raw vegan/Raw food diet

A raw vegan diet consists of unprocessed vegan foods that have not been heated above 115 degrees Fahrenheit (46 degrees Celsius). “Raw foodists†believe that foods cooked above this temperature have lost a significant amount of their nutritional value and are harmful to the body.

    6. Macrobiotic

The macrobiotic diet, revered by some for its healthy and healing qualities, includes unprocessed vegan foods, such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and allows the occasional consumption of fish. Sugar and refined oils are avoided. Perhaps the most unique qualifier of the macrobiotic diet is its emphasis on the consumption of Asian vegetables, such as daikon, and sea vegetables, such as seaweed.

    7. Omnivore

A diet that includes any type of food, plant, animal, insect or seafood, that's put in front of me.

    8. Carnivor

A diet of mostly meat, including seafood, but not insects.

    This should be fun. :D

Where's the icecream, potato chip, and easy-cheese diet option? Who needs meat and veggies when you have maltodextrin and trisodium phosphate?

ice cream (milk), potato chips and cheese would technically go in the Vegetarian field, but technical is the last place I'd want this thread to go.:D
But you didn't vote that way, because my 1 vote in that catigory still stands alone.:p

Interesting thread. I eat a pescatarian diet, though I don't care for the word. I also dislike the fact that "vegetarian" is almost universally used to mean ovo-lacto-vegetarian. Dairy products are not vegetables. But I am aware that this is how the word is used.

The term "macrobiotic" really does not have a generally-accepted definition. While it usually excludes highly-processed foods and crops grown with chemicals, I have never met two adherents of a macrobiotic diet that gave me the same criteria for it. When I was young, there were people who ate nothing but cooked brown rice, and called that "macrobiotic." Of course, you cannot survive long on that alone. I've had people tell me it means only raw food, people who say it means only locally-grown organic food, etc.

I predict that most Priuschatters are omnivores, though I am aware of one vegan.

And at the risk of hijacking the thread, I will mention that I was once told that I would go to hell for being a vegetarian. This was around 40 years ago. The individual felt that god put the animals on the Earth for us to eat, and I was refusing his gift.

Well, since some might want to know, I copied the first 6 definitions from vegetarian.about.com. The last 2 definitions came from yours truly:D
On another note, I once dated a Thai gal when I was living in Amsterdam. I knew she enjoyed a varied diet, but when we took a vacation to Bangkok, I discovered she ate chickens feet (boiled), dried squid/octopus (similar to jerky) and breaded and fried insects (I never ask what kind). Since she also ate fish, fruits, berries and vegetables, a true omnivore.

I eat vegetarians, so I guess that makes me a vegetarian once removed. ;)

Actually, I fully agree with the morality of vegetarianism, and have given a meat-free diet an honest try more than once, but I feel horrible. I've sourced some relatively local free-range grass-fed organic beef, so that somewhat mitigates my guilt. I love sockeye salmon, and I have a local wild source for that, too.

I eat pretty healthfully, for the most part. I don't even consider stuff like pop, chips, and ice cream to be edible, though I admit to a weakness for dark chocolate. I don't eat much bread, and about the only dairy I like is butter - the bread is just a butter delivery system. I eat a fair bit of fruits and vegetables, mostly raw. No potatoes, corn, or pigs. Lotsa rice, organic soy milk, and various nuts and seeds as snacks and 'trail mix'. I don't think I could give up coffee, and I'm becoming increasingly snobbish about it - too many people are just wanton coffee sluts. :p

So, my diet doesn't really fit any of the above categories. I guess you could call it 'picky, and healthy.'

A woman at work told me that she has a friend who is vegan "except for bacon"...

    A baconerian?

I'm (so far) the lone Vegan/Raw Vegan. I'm not always raw vegan, but my percentage of raw food is always high (about 80% of what I eat), and I'll do extended stretches of eating only raw food occasionally.

I try to avoid leather when possible (bad feet - decent shoes often have some leather. sigh), I avoid honey in most things, and I buy organic sugar that was not filtered through bone char. I also generally avoid beer that's filtered through rendered fish guts (a direct quote from the brew master of Stone Brewery, makers of Arrogant Bastard Ale, one of the BEST damn beers there is).

Hyo, one of the best quotes I've read is: If you can't be a vegetarian, eat a vegetarian. ;)

I have often stated that I am a carnivor in discussions on food, so this became a no brainer. I just love my meat. I still eat vegetables and fruit - my wife keeps forcing them on me, and just love some of the Indian vegetarian dishes, but a meal is not really complete unless there is some meat in it.

I eat small amounts of milk products, but not eggs or animals. I suppose that makes me a veganarian.

Rae: I prefer to avoid leather clothes too, but pretty much refuse to wear synthetics. For shoes I like canvas. I recently rediscovered an old favorite: Palladium. They are not sold local in my state, but can be bought online.

Primarily vegan past 20 years. SAD (Standard American Diet) first 46 years. Current diet is based on my understanding of the diets recommended by doctors McDougall, Ornish, Esselstyn, and, more recently, Delgado. These doctors advocate a diet based on complex carbohydrates, highly colored vegetables, and limited fruit. Animal products, particularly dairy, are regarded as destructive to health. Processed foods generally have too much salt, sugars, and excitotoxins such as MSG.

One unexpected conversion to such a diet is Bill Clinton. After his latest stent clogged up, his research lead to Esselstyn and Ornish. Here's his interview with Wolf Spitzer
The first two minutes are Clinton, and there's another 7 minutes of Esselstyn & Ornish.

Yeah, I eat all that stuff, too; just not on Thursdays.

I think the better food question is this: "What kind of foods do you eat in your Prius?"

For me, I like fries and frosty's unless I get pretzel bread from the Aberdeen Bakery.

    Happy Motoring,

    Tom

The poll should include "compulsive" and "emotional"...

Occasionally "disgruntled" when I'm trying to find something I can eat in a restaurant...

I've just recently become aware of Dr. McDougall. He has a simi-regular spot on a channel I watch on my FTA G-19 satallite dish.
Hmm, just checked the program guide and McDougall will be on at 2:00PM and repeats at 10:00PM PST today. It's available via live streaming online, here.
    Thanks for sharing.

Those are two of the best and healthiest foods out there, as long as you leave off the butter. Both were staples for different native populations in this hemisphere.

That would have complicated the poll needlessly. WHAT you eat is the subject of this poll. HOW you eat, and eating disorders, properly belong in another poll, since any of the HOW answers can be combined with any of the WHAT answers.

When one doctor has ideas that are totally different from the rest of the scientific community, it should set a red flag: He's probably a quack. If he claims that a particular diet will cure a wide variety of diseases, he's almost certainly a quack. And if he advocates concentrating on a narrow range of foods, or excluding certain foods entirely, he's definitely a quack.

Meat in excess is certainly unhealthy, and I choose for personal reasons to avoid it entirely. But when I do avoid a food entirely, it's for personal reasons such as revulsion or because I don't care for the taste or texture.

Oh, and American Crystal Sugar quit using bone char several decades ago, in favor of a purely chemical process. Last I heard, cane sugar producers were still using it. I prefer honey, dehydrated cane juice (unprocessed), and maple syrup, all of which taste better. I dislike the taste of agave.
