Audi will have multiple 2012 Hybrids. A6 Hybrid 38mpg - pretty good for a big heavy car!

I wonder how muh it'll cost.

Lexus' GS460 hybrid costs $60k and can't get more than 25mpg.

Apples and Oranges. GS 450h is a high performance hybrid, 340hp V-6 with RWD.

This Audi is a 2.0 I-4 hybrid with FWD. No thanks. I can appreciate the effort though.

Also the 38MPG quoted is on the Euro cycle, not here.

I'll resist the urge to compare those cars to mpg champions like Prius, Civic, Insight, etc. and just be happy that so many manufactures are raising efficiency. :)

However it is I can visually agree with F8L, let me reiterate his point and agree wholeheartedly that it is a great thing when manufacturers release their intent to sell fuel efficient vehicles. Many people have been waiting years for more and more manufacturers to build high-MPG vehicles.

We waited for one of two things (or both):
    - The EPA applies pressure to increase CAFE standards
    - Their is increased consumer pressure to sell high-mileage vehicles. This could be driven by the wider acceptance of high-mileage vehicles or the desire to not be the last (only) manufacturer still selling an entirely-conventional fleet.

Either way, my personal opinion is that this is just another step in the right direction. I don't care how they do it, I don't care what their first attempt delivers, if they truly and honestly put forth and effort and continue improvements in subsequent years, this is a step in the right direction.

So does that mean it's 38 UK mpg or 38 US mpg? If it's the former then that's about 30 mpg US which is poor.

That's not that great of an accomplishment. They could have done that 50+ years ago if they wanted to

I don't care why they are doing it. I only care that they are doing it. This isn't like sex where I would care about the motivation behind the action. Then again, I'm sure people like Jayman wouldn't care either way. :D

Yep ... maybe they WILL build it ... and maybe it will get 38mpg. After listening to GM brag for YEARS saying they'd build an "all electric" motor assist, $30,000 priced, 230mpg Volt ... I began to feel like Charlie Brown giving another attempt at kicking the football that Lucy was holding. I'll believe it when it's here. So far, no hybrid builder is keeping their word about what they're doing, except Ford and Toyota.

In theory, it should be a SNAP for Audi or ANY manufacturer (worth their salt) to build a HEAVY 4 banger hybrid that gets mpg's in the 30's. Heck our RX-400h is a heavy AWD Luxury SUV hybrid ... and it has a V-SIX !! ... and it still gets in the 30mpg's. I hope Audi keeps their promise, because look how embarrassing it is for GM that the Volt fell way short of its YEARS of promises. Good luck Audi ... you put it in writing, you won't be able to deny it later.
    ;)

there's a lot of talk and promising going on out there. mfg's must feel they have to do something to keep people paying attention until they can play catch up. i'm more interested in what i can go down to the dealership and purchase off the lot. prius, insight, hycam, fusion, a few lexus, civic, highlander, ford escape etc. everything else is pie in the sky or not available in geographic areas etc. bring it on! and stop the doubletalk.
