Just took over a 2004 Prius from my wife (bought her a new 2010). I didn't pay much attention to it over the last 7 years as it was "her" car. I know she used only the local dealer for services and only did the services listed in the factory service record.

That being said since its "my" car now I have been all over the car. I noticed a sound similar to something stuck on a tire while driving. The sound speeds up when I speed up and slows down when I slow down. Nothing could be seen on the tires. I looked up under the car for something and notice what appears to be a cover hanging down missing a screw! The same screw is missing on each side. I can take better photos if needed.

1)Would these screws be removed for an oil change?
    2) Is there a part number or screw size I can go buy?

I think the sounds I am hearing are this trim/cover flapping in the wind.

    1) I believe that you are missing plastic fasteners, not screws. If the missing parts were screws, then you should be able to find plastic inserts that the screws would tap into. There is no need to remove the plastic undercovers when changing the engine oil and oil filter.

While you are at it, I suggest that you raise up the front of the car so that the front tires are hanging down, and look into the wheel wells on both sides to see if you notice any other missing fasteners.

    2) Assuming that the missing parts are fasteners, your best bet would be to visit your local dealer's parts dept and see if the parts clerk can locate replacements for you. They will probably cost ~$2 each. Good luck.

Thanks ! I stopped by the Toyota dealer to just buy the clips (I was going to ask the service manager why they left them off, but it's been 2 months since it's been there...so eh). The parts guy verified the right part number and tossed them over free. Crappy that some tech decided to leave them out, but they are back in now.

I'm impressed that a Parts Dept. actually had your parts in stock. They always have to order whatever I need.

And I wouldn't rush to blame the dealer for them being missing, sometimes they just fall out. They're on all kinds of cars now and I hate'em. Same goes for the plastic insert screw taps, a few R&Rs and they loosen up too much for my liking.
