If I had gotten bad service i would have posted it here, but I didnt get bad service, so in the interest of being fair and balanced...:D

I just returned from getting the "free" 5k mile service on my Gen III.
The dealer was Magnussen Toyota in Auburn, CA.

Service was courteous, friendly and completed before they said it would be done. There was no attempt to up-sell services. My final cost was $0.00 just like oit was supposed to be The service writer volunteered that the car took 0W-20 synthetic oil that was good for 10k miles so no oil change was required today. The maintenance sticker they put on the windshield gave 5,000 miles and 5 months from now instead of the too soon sticker some dealers use.

There shuttle service was efficient with a nice clean van. We had them drop us at Katrina's a small but excellent breakfast spot in Auburn and then pick us up after breakfast.

The only area of disagreement was the AC LCD display which is too dim to read when it's bright outside. They said it's normal, I think it's too dim/low contrast. It's not a show stopper, so I will wait until the 10k mile service before I get more insistent. I'm goig to start a separate thread about the display after I do a search and refresh my memory on the earlier display problems.

    Did they overfill your oil?

Isn't an oil change more-or-less the entire service? So what did they do?

There's a TSB on blurry A/C display and just show it to them to get it replaced.

No, there's a 20 point inspection or something that they run through.

I too have had NO problems when I go the dealer to get service. I simply write up what services I expect on that visit, give a copy to the service advisor, tape a copy to the steering wheel. I also supply my own oil, filter and "O" ring. Any other items that I have a question on the advisor and I talk it out
Amazingly, I get the services that I want, without any problems.

Can it really be that easy...yes it can!

    Mendel,

    I forgot to add...

It's a relief to have a dealer that makes you feel confident, and comfortable. However, if they were really good, they would have bought you breakfast rather than just drop you.

Kudos to a good dealer. They'll appreciate your kind words, too!

    Happy Motoring,

    Tom

    Good question.

Tire rotation, check and top off fluid levels, check brakes and also see if anything is falling off the car. They did rotate the tires (I had marked one of them si could verify). They also set the tire pressure to factory recommended pressure. I will correct that tomorrow.:D. They also opened the hood but no fluid levels needed correcting so they didn't correct any. They also went though a check list. I can't vouch for their haveing checked everything on the list, but they did line out or put N/A by things that weren't applicable to a Prius. They also wrote down tire tread and brake pad thickness.

The 5k service is basically a waste of the dealers time and my time so I took it as an opportunity to see what their service writers and service department were like. I went in acting like a sheep to be shorn and didn't ask any questions or say anything to indicate that I was anything but a clueless potential source of money for them

I was favorably impressed because they didn't try anything sleazy and the service writer told me what was going to be done and got it right. He also knew which oil it was supposed to get next time at 10k miles.:cheer2:
Now that they are at 10k mile oil change intervals in the US they should drop the 5k mile service interval. except maybe the first 5k miles check to see how the new car is doing.

Edit: Magnusson was also one of very few dealers in 50 years of car ownership where I actually liked the salesman. The finance guy was a barracuda, but that's in their job description so no harm done there either.

The restaurant is well know locally and the food is excellent. I've told a couple of people at the dealer that they should have a package service deal what includes breakfast at Katrina's.

My take on what constitutes the first service. This is based on the Canadian Owners Supplement booklet. It's descriptions are totally subjective, verbose, and encompass all toyota models, so you really have to sift through it line-by-line, to see what's applicable, and when:

First off, unlike their US counterpart, Toyota Canada has not increased the oil and filter change interval; they still specify 6 month or 8000 kilometer (5000 mile), whichever comes first. Personally I like this; I think the 6mo/8000km interval is long enough. Even if they spec'd longer I would stick with this.

My only quible: maybe they should consider specifying oil filter change at alternate oil changes, ie: one without, one with, and so on. This is Honda's policy, though you have to fight to get dealership service departments to follow it.

The following are the items on the Canadian maintenance schedule, for the first, 6mo/8000km service (with some comment):

    1. Change engine oil and filter.

    2. Inspect engine air filter. Visually check, and clean with compressed air as needed. Replace at least every 48000 km. (I'd be inclined to not bother with this. Once a year is more than enough. Toyota is the first manufacturer I've encountered that suggested blowing dust out of an air filter. In fact, it's often the opposite, that you shouldn't do that: it might get dirt over to the outlet side of the filter. What I've always heard: inspect it, but don't attempt to clean, and replace at a specified interval)

    3. Lubricate locks, hinges and latches. (I checked ours as received from the dealership. They look very clean, no glopped-on grease. Wipe a junction with a finger and it comes away feeling very slippery. My hunch: spray-on silicone was used at the factory, very clean and neat. Will continue to use this. Likely once a year is more than often enough.)

    4. Inspect lights, horn, and wipers. (The owner knows horn and wiper are ok, just by using them. For the lights: activate left/right turn signals, hazards, depress brakes, shift to reverse (for back-up lights), toggle all headlights on/off and have someone walk around and verify working correctly, nothing burnt out.)

    5. Check coolant, brake and wiper fluid levels. (Do you want to pay pros to do this...)

    6. Inspect all tire pressures, including spare. Rotate tire location as needed. (I would do the tire rotation once per year, in conjunction with the yearly spec'd. brake inspection. With snow tires, do it when swapping. If you're dealer servicing and raise your tire pressures, be sure tell them emphatically to leave the tire pressures alone. Paying someone $80~$90 per hour to check your tire pressures, and likely bleed air out of them kind of bugs me...).

That's it, the full 6 month service. Note, brake inspection is not included in this maintenance. Without engine oil and filter change, very little to it. Actually nothing the owner can't easily do themselves.

I also had the dealer change my oil and filter at the 5K miles maintenance check. I figured I'd change the oil/filter every 10K miles now. One post a while back said that when he had this done at 5K, he saw metal stuff in the oil filter. So I thought it best to have the oil/filter change done sooner than later. Of course, the purpose of the oil filter is to weed out this junk, so maybe it's OK for another 5K miles? I don't know, but I'll sleep better.
