Here in Socal, you can tattletale on smoking cars. Call 1800-CUT-SMOG. Give the date, the license plate, where the car was seen, and then, well, I don't know what happens. If you could, would you tattle?

Yes. I do in fact "tattle" on the relatively rare occasion that the opportunity arises. We have a similar program here in Texas. Just because you are poor and/or irresponsible and/or a 3rd world native doesn't mean I want to (or should) breathe your emissions.

I used to when I had the number on speed dial but I switched phones and keeforgetting to set it up. Thanks for the reminder.

I have no problem turning in people who are polluting my community. Especially those punk nice person diesel truck owners who like to smoke it up when they pull in front of me.

I wish I could... For some unknown reason (well it is known, it is a heavily republican state) the emission and smog testing for all vehicles was canceled back in 2005 or so. So now there is no recourse and it just gets worse. Only Denver still has emission testing and by a strange coincidence it is also the most democratic part of the state...

Beaters that were pulled off the road during emission testing are now back on the road. Nobody ever fixed them, they just parked them. It is almost a requirement to drive with the air on recirculate when there is any amount of traffic. :(

I wish there was a tattle number for smokers too. If you throw your cig out the window it is a $1000 fine. But nobody does it infront of a cop, so noone is punished. We have been in a drought for the better part of a decade and almost all the fires that burn down the national parks are people's homes are started by discarded cigarettes that are still lit. Even saw someone do it the other day on a heavily treed mountain pass just after a "Fire Danger EXTREMELY HIGH Today" sign. >.<

    I wouldn't do it.
    Doesn't feel right to me.
Report your neighbor...Turn em in...dangerous precedent to set.

I don't like smog, I would rather an ideal world where nobodys vehicle produced smog. But, I'm not going to become an informant on my neighbors actions to reach that end. Because I think I dislike that even more than smog.

It also seems aimed at the poor. No...I'll cough up a lung before I'll be a 1-800-Stool Pigeon...

    I agree!

    Where does this end?

Surely the local government will police emissions from vehicles and if not they should, but getting the public to grass up others for something so minor is a slippery slope.

The only places I can think of that happily encouraged informing on your neighbours was the old Soviet regime and Nazi Germany!

the dems actually came up with a drop a dime program for people who live here but have their car registered in another state. these progroms pop up from time to time when tax revenue is low and the legislators want a raise.:)

Not all. Just the ones I identified with a bright description in my post. :D

I actually like diesel pickups for work purposes and I've been very tempted to get one. I almost bought my roomate's 2006 GMC Duramax a couple of years ago but even 18mpg is not good enough after being spoiled by the Prius. So I'll just wait until something better comes out. I'm needing something with more MPG, less emissions output, and a bit smaller.

So in summary, I do not hate diesels or their owners. I do hate those owners that remove their emissions equipment, install a smoke switch, then run around town billowing smoke out of their tailpipe and in through the windows of other drivers. Ignorant asshats like that should be ticketed to hell and back. :)

Example of my cause for anger.

That program in Mass has been around for years - since the 80's at least. I grew up in the Boston area and had a bunch of friends who's parents registered their cars at their vacation home in New Hampshire. While registration and insurance was less the big savings came when buying a car - there is no sales tax in NH and in Mass it was 5%.

It's a Calif 800 # & it's anonymous. You're going down the freeway ... some dude is throwing up a smoke screen like James Bond in Gold Finger ... heck yes.
But in MT? Heck ... nothing but fed rules, and a conservative 20% of all cars stink like raw fuel ... like a 1960's stage 3 smog alert ongoing, back when Fontana Steel Mill was running full strength.

I have been calling these noxious bozos in for many years! They get a SMOG Check, and they have to fix their car.
I am really tired of breathing other peoples excessive hydrocarbons.
Strangely the AQMD seems to be having an positive effect, it has been a considerable time, years since SoCal has had a 1st or 2nd stage SMOG Alert!!
