Hybrids Prove Very Reliable (Vancouver Yellow Cab update)

    Well from what I recall the "base" model was 29,995$ CND back in 2004 and now on Toyota.ca it's shown at 27,800$ CND. I see a price drop of 2,195$ for the "base" model.

    Of course, back then we had 2,000$ from the Canadian government and 2,000$ more if you leave here in Quebec. A total of 4,000$ in incentives. Today the only credit left is the one from Quebec, the "Tax Credit for the Acquisition or Lease of a New Fuel-Efficient Vehicle". It is now 1.5k$ in 2011.

    For the customer it meant 25,995$ in 2004 vs 26,300$ today. So the customer price is in fact almost the same (400$ more today) but the manufacturer really reduced the MSRP.

    Since government incentives are not linked to Toyota pricing policy, we can still say that the MSRP is lower today. ;)

    Except that SKS was not standard in the 2004 model. You either get the regular remote keyless entry (and stick the fob in the slot) or you get 3-dr SKS. Now at least you get SKS standard, albeit a "lite" version with only a sensor on 1 door.

    Our 2005 is the same as yours and it's $34,000 and change. A base 2005 was $30,500 (up fro $29,990) and a loaded 2005 with navigation and bluetooth was $37,000. (up to $38,000 by 2008 before the price drop)

    A top 2010 model is $37,000. That's roughly the same price for all the improvements on the 2010 model plus all the extra options. Pretty good if you ask me.

    I got the impression from the video that they were talking about used Prii. Gen II's value has come down significantly since the media fiascos. I was able to buy a Gen II for nearly the same price as the used Yaris's I was seriously considering buying.

    I thought this too. Cab drivers love these things but hauling a carload of 3 people from an airport with all their luggage has got to cramp the Gen II's cargo space.

    Good point. There's extra legroom in the rear which is good (considering how much legroom there is already. The wheelbase is 3" longer than the standard prius) and the extra cargo would be a blessing for airport transfers. I wonder if they can modify the Prius v to fit those handicap lifts that I see on current minivan taxis. That could help. Even if it drops the mpg to 35mpg because of the extra weight, it would still be better than the 15-20mpg they're currently getting.

    Did they drop the price last year -after- the new model was introduced? I thought I checked the prices when the GIII first came available and it was more expensive. Or perhaps I was high on something in the water.
    Anyway, I yield, it is less expensive.

    Interesting but why are they changing corolla brakes eveyr 17-18k miles? Also
    batteries age, it's not just the amount they are used.

    This is true to varying extents depending on the chemistry. Most Lithium-Ion cells most definitely have a relatively short calendar lifetime. NiMh (Prius) not so much. I had 20 year old NiCads (similar to NiMh) on my electric van and they were still working perfectly with all their capacity.

    I just got rid of an electric razor that, to my surprise, still held a pretty decent charge 10 years later :)

    There was a bit of a marketing thing when the Gen 3 was introduced.

    The price was $27,500, a drop from $27,710 for the 2009 model in May 2009.

    You may have looked at an artifically inflated dealer price but the price on Toyota.ca was as follows


    2004 - $29,990
    2005 - $30,2xx with another bump mid-year to $30,580
    2006 - $31,280
    2007 - $31,280
    2008 - $29,500
    2008.5 - $27,400
    2009 - $27,600
    2009.5 - $27,710

    I also stand corrected on the 2005 Prius w/ Nav. It is $37,995 for that package, a $7,430 package that carried through to 2007 when it was dropped to $5,780.
