I'm OLD and haven't bought a new car in over 12 years so forgive my question. Does the Prius come from the facotry with "undercoating" and "rust-proofing" like we used to worry about "in the old days" ? THANKS, J

Welcome aboard J! Did you buy one or just looking?

The Prius comes with some undercoating. I think mainly for sound-proofing. I did apply some (spray can) to mine just for piece of mind.

Don't most cars sold today, including the Prius, come with 100,000 mile rust perforation warranty?

At the least, i'm pretty sure the Toyota corrosion warranty covers all labor and parts for at least 6 or 7 years.

Thanks for the replies everyone.....I haven't even started looking; there are so many choices; but I do remember the dealer trying to sell me undercoating and rustproofing on my last car (2000). I remembered seeing them already "done" at the factory so I polietly thanked him and we went on to refuse the extended warranty; then the dealer financing. It was fun. THANKS again, J

I have to ask you what old is? Someone recently did a poll on this sight having four to about twelve year intervals till he hit 50 and above-so I guess I'm old at 61.

I agree that you don't need any of the extras that the dealer will try to tack on. I'd even refuse the extended warranty. These cars just don't need them. The hybrid components have at least a 100,000 mile warranty anyway. Don't let the dealership sucker you into their recommended extras unless you've thoroughly reseached the items.

The closer at my dealer didn't offer any magic fairy dust, just the extra warranty and the maintenance pre-pay with reimbursement. I skipped the warranty and took the pre-pay because I could afford it and it looked like a push.

Others before me have already covered the undercoat issue (no pun intended!)
    Good luck with the purchase!!

The Prius is warranted to 12 years for anti perforation here in the UK. To put this in perspective, we use a lot of salt on our roads in winter and back in the 1970's I remember our family Datsun lasting about 6 years before it rotted away to nothing. You see 10 year old Prius/Prii still driving around now with no visible rust or rot.

I'd say you should be pretty safe with a Prius.
