I'm choosing between 2009 white or 2010 charcoal gray, both are brand new. Dealer is offering 33% (US$16,500) discount from list price of US$ 50,000 (cars here are very expensive as well as interest rates). They only offer discount of US$4,000 on 2011 models. Prius here only have 1 trim, the basic model with leather seats.

Me and my wife really only wanted the white, but feels the 2009 model year loses 1 year depreciation to the 2010 gray. And i still have to pay extra US$300 for the white paint.

Are we stupid to go ahead and get the white? Need comments, thanks.

I would get the 2010. It's the new body style, the 2009 is the older body style. I like the 2010 better.

And OMG, 50,000 for a PRIUS?! That's a lot of money for a Prius! I would rather buy one in the US and ship it over, lol!

    Does your country allow that?

A new 2009 and a 2010? I could understand a 2010 being leftover but a new 2009, now??? It's new and never been registered? You realize that the 2009 is a previous generation and that the 2010 brought many improvements, right?

If both are the same price and comparably equipped, I'd go for the 2010, as it's overall a superior car.

Sorry for the confusion, they are both third generation Prius. 2009 and 2010 is their production year and will be reflected in our registration as their model year.

Import duty here is 100% + 12% VAT + shipping freight, so importing from US is more expensive.

So your 2009 is our 2010, right? I'd go for the Blizzard Pearl. $300 is worth it.

Uhh... I think Singapore is probably one of the most expensive. Per Toyota -, it's 136,488 Singapore dollars or $107,242 USD. From what I understand (very little), the crazy car prices there are partly because of their [ame=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Certificate_of_Entitlement]Certificate of Entitlement - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame].

I don't know the details. I had former roommates from Singapore years ago who told me about the crazy car prices and gave me some examples.

32kcolors: yes its the same 3rd gen Prius. Thanks for your advise.

Car prices here are x2 than US, Singapore is x4.

My goodness! That is absolutely insane. How many people can actually afford $107,242 USD in Singapore or the $50,000 in the Philippines...

Wow, those prices really are insane. I guess Philippines requires the model year be the year it was actually built. But if it's a Gen 3, and was built in 2009, why is it still on the lot? If the white is a Gen 3, I'd go for that over the gray. But you're correct, you'll get more of a depreciation hit, but if you plan to keep it for a good while (at least 3 years), the difference will be minimized.

That color will hold up better for you than the gray (which will show every little imperfection after 20,000k.) Since they're both G3's depreciation will not matter as much as it would here in the USofA, where a 2009 is a G2. In fact....if you were to be a high mileage driver, and I suspect that you're not given your prices for gas...then the extra year would help your depreciation over time.

White is also a little cooler.
The last time I was in your neck of the woods.....it was HOT.

Don't worry about the VAT. You're going to see the US experience the joys of a 'value added tax' [sic] over here pretty soon. :)
You kids in the studio audience should pay attention to those overseas car prices.
That's what happens when a country spends a lot more than they make :)

    Yeah, Yeah....I know.
    Fred's house of Pancakes.... :D

In many countries in Asia, the cost of car can be very prohibitive, especially completely built imported cars. For example the Lexus RX300 in Thailand goes for !85,000 USD. On the other hand, the Prius III, which is now built in Thailand, goes for approximately 40,000 USD. Before the Prius was built in Thailand, the price was just below 100,000 USD.

Japan and Hong Kong prices can be more reasonable than the rest of the continent. For example, I priced a MB E350 in Hong Kong several years ago. The price was approximately 75,000 USD. In Thailand, the E280 was approximately 150,000 USD.

You guys in the US are lucky.

Yeah. And the worst part is after the almost 100% taxes, we still have the worst roads and worst traffic.

It isn't the first that is more expensive than Israel, here in Oz you pay about $53,000 for an iTech (about a Prius V) and the Aussie dollar is worth more than the US dollar right now!!
