I need to know if my Prius has stability control and/or side airbags for the rear seats.

I have a 2005 Toyota Prius. Pretty sure it's the base model, because I have to put my smart key in the ignition for it to start.

If your car has the front/rear side curtain airbags, there will be a marking on the "A" pillar saying so (I forget the exact letters/words).

You should look carefully through the list of standard equipment and package option equipment in the 2005 Prius eBrochure:

    http://www.toyotacertified.com/ebrochures/05_prius.pdf

You'll see that the package option equipment wasn't strictly cumulative the higher you went up in package #.

This might help, as I just recently purchased a 2008 Prius and had a similar question on what options and what package I had on the car. Check the Toyota website, Ask Toyota: [email protected] or you can log in through their website too to get to the inquire. You must supply your VIN #, name, etc..

Within 8 hours or so I had a response from Kym Wilson that included what package I had, what was included in the package, the dealer the car was sold from, plus a lot more in a PDF form for the individual car. That is what I call tremendous service from them! Great car too!

The base 2005 does not have side air bags or stability control.

    gobux,

I too have a 2005 (at 105,300 miles now). It's a Pkg #4 (AM) & if you look at the e-brochure link that Boo so nicely provided, you'll see that vehicle stability control (VSC) is grouped along with the HID headlights (not nearly as troublesome as the D4R bulbs have been in the '06-'09's---the '04 & '05 used the D2R bulbs for their HID's), so if you have fog lights in the lower grill then you have HID headlights & VSC.

The letters that Boo couldn't remember for the "A-pillar" (between the little front triangle windows & the front doors) will be SRS (for Secondary Restraint System). If you see those letters on the front pillars, they will also be on the rear pillars (again between the rear little triangle windows & the rear door openings). Also stamped into the plastic just below those letters are the words "side curtain". If you have those letters near the tops of all 4 pillars up near the roof, you should also find 1/2 inch by 1+1/2 inch cloth tags saying "SRS side airbag" on the SIDES closest to the doors (stitched into one of the seams about shoulder height) of only both front seatbacks.

One more comment about your thinking you have a base model because you have to put your "smart key" (as you call it---smart keys have a silver Toyota logo on the fob, but that silver paint could have worn off in 6 years) into the dash slot & as you can see in the chart in the e-brochure, only Pkg #1 (GY) didn't have the smart key system, BUT there are 2 other things that may have happened in the past that lead you to believe you MUST put the fob into the dash slot.

One is to look down near the bottom edge of the dash (by your knees in the recess below the steering column just to the right of the hood release latch) to see if there is a push-button switch labeled "key". If there is, it might have been bumped by accident shutting the smart key system off. It should be in the outward position for the system to work. [DUH!! After typing the above sentences it just dawned on me that there is an externally visible way to easily see if you have the smart key system---just look at the outside door handles on the 2 front doors (or to the right of the Toyota emblem on the rear hatch) to see if there are any 1/2" square black rubber buttons. These are the buttons to push to lock an SKS equipped Prius].

The other thing I had been thinking was that the fob you have to put in the dash slot might be a "dumb" fob [a black one that NEVER had any silver paint on the logo (& won't work with SKS) or a USED silver-painted one that can't be properly programmed into the car's memory because it is/was USED (without an expensive "re-seeding" of the car's computer---but a USED silver one that MUST be put into the dash slot won't unlock the car with the push-buttons)]. So if your fob unlocks the car by pushing the buttons but you must put the fob into the dash slot, that indicates that either you don't have the SKS option or your "key" switch below the steering column has been turned off.

Sorry I got so long-winded in my answer, but many times we who try to help just don't know whether the poster is somebody new to Prius ownership, lost or never got an owner's manual, or is just baffled by some of the complexities of the car & is coming here for help. Yes , there are short answers, but they can still leave the poster baffled, so that's why I answer like I do sometimes.

Edit : I was typing all this (with interruptions) when firepa63 gave you a short answer, but I just stated above, I wasn't convinced you positively have a base car just because you must put a fob into the dash slot.

    Hey, firepa63,

Just for clarification purposes, by "base model" you mean Pkg #0 (zero), the model #1220 (not the standard model #1224 with the 6 different option pkg's for 2005), right? Not too many current Prius owners are aware that rental & municipal fleets back in 2004 & 2005 were equipping themselves with the bare bones/base model Pkg #0/model 1220 (not shown in any brochure charts nor generally not known or sold to the public). The public was only aware of the option pkg's 1 thru 9 in 2004 & 1 thru 6 in 2005 (the pkg number reduction having been achieved by simply making the rear hatch wiper standard equipment in 2005, where before it had been a separate stand alone option item in the 2004 brochure option charts).

Also, the base Pkg #0 (model #1220) would NOT have had the SKS either. And, Ryanpl, did you forget that the side & curtain airbags were in the 2005 Pkg #6 as well? But you were correct in omitting Pkg #2 (I don't know why Toyota would do that in/for just one variant of the standard model #1224).
