Toyota Extra Care Platinum or Gold

On my last car I did not have to deal with any of those things because nothing broke until I had over 180,000 miles. I have over 50,000 miles on my 2010 Prius and I have not had to deal with any of the things you listed. It’s funny you do not post the exact amount. What did you pay $998? The odds are againt you that you will never get a return on investment on your $998. Why gamble when the odds are against you?

That's the point. According to your argument one is throwing away money if spent on something where the odds are against them ever using.

Is every owner using every single option they purchased so that they will get all their extra money's worth out of the purchase?

Obviously not to varying degrees, which means they also wasted x amount of money, just like I did on the warranty.

 

This is an interesting exchange. Nice to see andreuccio's objective analysis and reasoned approach to counterbalance some of judgeless' arrogance and self-righteousness.

 

Here is a list of the key features of the IV over the II and III. I will post how often I use them.

Leather trimmed seats – I use this ever second I am in the car.
Leather trimmed steering wheel – I use this ever second I am in the car.
Heated front seats – I only use this on cold days. In Cleveland that is a lot of days.
Power driver lumbar support – I set it and leave it
3-Door Smart Key – I use this 3-4 times a day.
Illuminated entry – I use this everyday but only at night.
Plasmacluster – May 3 times a week when I drive by something that smells.
Autodimming rearview mirror - I use this everyday but only at night.
Homelink – I use this 5-10 times a day to open my garage door.

I have over 50,000 miles. If I wasted the money on an extended warranty this is how many times I would have used it over the 2 years I have owned the car.

I do think when people buy a IV or a V over a II or III they use most of the features daily. I bet it would be hard to find anyone that has used an extended warranty on a Prius.

If I go for an extended warranty, (and I might), I would go for the platinum rather than the gold. If I'm going to insure, it's going to be against the calamity, not the small stuff. Might as well get the more comprehensive coverage.

Again, though, it would be useful here to hear from other Prius owners about what, if anything, has failed in their cars. Maybe if we do have problems they're more likely to be with things on the gold rather than the platinum, or maybe not.

I envy you that, and find it commendable. I wish I were that resourceful, or had the time to be. That I recognize that I am not is one of the reasons I am considering getting an extended warranty even though I know the math is against me. I don't have the time, the interest, or the skill to look through junkyards for parts for my car.

Neither am I, which is another reason I'm considering buying the warranty. I don't want to warranty my own car either.

 

There are 2 reasons I decided to go with an extended warranty

1. For the peace of mind, knowing that Murphy's law is always hanging over my head

2. The warranties are transferable so if I put my car up for sale sitting next to one with no warranty there is a pretty good chance that will be a selling point on a used vehicle that they have no idea what the actual history is.

I am also considering the platinum. I'll probably wait until just before 3yrs or 36k before I pull the trigger. A relative just had his hid headlight repaired on his 2006 to the tune of $600. (which may qualify for reimbursement, hopefully). While toyotas and the prius are very reliable, there is some advanced technology there that can bse pricy, such as that AC compressor. Of course, it's important to have some data on failure rates...

 

Andreuccio. Why don’t you start a new thread in the GEN I and II forums and ask people how they made out on their extended warranties before you spend $1,000.

 

I believe I'll have to.
