I just got an 08 Prius (50k mi), and on the 2nd day of ownership, I got the check engine light:mad:. I am hoping that the codes are just from making the mistake of filling it up with Premium Gas, but the error codes say:

    P0441
Evaporative Emission System Incorrect Purge Flow
    P0455
Evaporative Emission System Leak Detected (gross leak/no flow)

The car has no smell of gas fumes, gets about 50 mpg, and looks very clean under the hood (like new), runs very smooth. I just changed the gas cap, and am hoping that after the gas goes down, I'll add the 87 octane gas, and maybe I won't see the check engine light.

Any ideas what those codes usually reflect? THANKS!

    Congratulations on your new acquisition.

Did you replace the gas cap with the correct Toyota part? The cap needs to be tightened to at least one click.

Both diagnostic trouble codes reflect a problem with the fuel tank emissions control. DTC P0441 and P0455 can be caused by the following long list of potential issues:

Fuel tank cap is incorrectly installed

Fuel tank cap is cracked or damaged

Vacuum hose cracks is blocked, damaged or disconnected
Open or short in vapor pressure sensor circuit

    Vapor pressure sensor

Open or short in EVAP VSV circuit

    EVAP VSV

Open or short in CCV circuit

    CCV

Open or short in VSV for purge flow switching valve circuit

VSV for purge flow switching valve

Fuel tank is cracked, or damaged

Charcoal canister is cracked, or damaged

Fuel tank over fill check valve is cracked or damaged

Thank you very much for your response, Patrick. I got the gas cap at AutoZone...so far so good. I have waited a long time to get a Prius, and am excited to get past this error code.

I'll post back any updates if the light goes on again. THANKS!

we are in ther same boat, wife recently bought an 07 Prius, 64k kms, 2nd day check engine light came on. Error code is P0456. The dealer tried to fix but the dreaded check engine light is back a week later.
After investigating the car's repair history we are finding out this code has been persistent for about a year now, all major EVAP parts have been replaced including the entire gas tank 3 times!!!
I don't think Toyota has a good handle on these codes...which is probably why the car was traded in.

I know this isn't much help but thought I would share. Tomorrow the car goes back to the dealer, I told the dealer to supply a replacement vehicle while the Prius is in for repairs. We like the Prius but the car's complexity is starting to scare me off.

    danbirch, cfhebert,

The Prius' fuel and evap system is more complicated than most folks can
    imagine. Details here.

FWIW, DTC P0441 is discussed on pg.14. DTC P0455 isn't mentioned.

So, I'd go with what Patrick says. He's better than a pdf anyday.

DTC P0441 and P0455 are generic codes, not manufacturer-specific. Hence the problem will be related to the emissions control system on the fuel tank.

However this is not a Kia forum, and you'll probably receive better help if you ask your question at a forum that specializes in your brand. Good luck.

has the dealer performed a smoke test? a small pin hole in your evap system will throw this code. best way to find it is with a smoker... good luck
