Multi Function Display /MIS Screen Doesn't Work

Mine too. 2006 w/o NAV. Worked fine until I parked it outside for 6 months (during this time the 12v battery died and I removed it to charge it). The car had no insurance and I had to move it from where it was parked so I had it towed (not flatbed tow) 6 miles to home. Both batteries have enough charge to drive the car fine. But the touch screen no longer responds in all menus. IS THERE A WAY TO RESET IT? WILL DETAILS OF THE PROBLEM SHOW UP ON A SCANNER?

There is usually one broken soldered connection inside the MED unit. Your choices are (1) to take the unit apart and resolder terminal #60 on the female half of the 60-terminal connector that connects the two circuit boards inside the unit, or (2) to replace the entire unit. Are you referring to the MFD (the large display in the top, middle of the dash) or the display that shows speedometer, etc.?

Can you repair my MFD for $75? The touchscreen stopped working for no reason.

I live in SoCal. I graduated from UC Berkeley -- do you study there?

 

I think we both are referring to the MFD. The post I referenced is mainly discussing the Combination Meter, but if you read the whole post it mentions the MFD as well as the Radio. Yes, I can repair it. If for some reason I can't (has yet to occur) then there is no charge for the attempt. (you will still have to cover the shipping costs)

I might be able to help you. I'm near downtown Los Angeles. I fixed my own MFD today; it took a few hours. (The repair part of the few hours was about six seconds of applying heat with a soldering gun to two terminals inside the unit. The rest was removal from the dashboard, disassembly on the kitchen table, then reassembly and reinstallation.)

My 2006 Multi function Display has started flickering when I try to turn down the screen and dash lights at night to avoid the glare. When I try to raise the light just enough to make the screen stop flickering the dash lights are dark....so I can't tell what speed I am travelling. My dealer says the display has failed and I need a replacement at a cost of $1,785. They didn't say anything about that being a refurbished unit. (I have read other threads where they have said the price of replacement is over $6,000).
I now don't trust them.
Also....my car just went thru one of the AL tornadoes right in the heart of things (Pleasant Grove). The house is still under repair. Poor Prius was filthy and banged and scratched but never had a tree land on her and so wasn't demolished. Could the MFD failure...which only started after that evening...be the cause of the problem? I could approach my insurance company about it.
And, even if they agree, should I put in what must be a refurbished unit?

 

Steve at Plug In Hybrid Electric Vehicle PHEV (Southern Indiana) will offer a tested salvaged MFD to you at a low cost (probably less than $400, if you ship your old MFD back to him) and either you or any Auto Stereo shop can do the install using the instructions at his web site.

pEEf (Northern CA see an earlier post here) can also repair the MFDs.

This was the problem with mine and seems to be very common. All you need to do is take the dash apart - (instruction from YouTube) search how to remove radio prius, remove the display (two 10mm bolts), and resolder the #60 pin once you have taken out a few little screws. Use the link from above for detailed instuctions (the hobbit link mentioned above). The problem originates from the misalignment of the four little screws that hold the board on, which puts stress on the 60 pin connection. After I resoldered the #60 pin (and the one just to the left of it for good measure) I only put three screws back on the board and left the one that was most misaligned out to relieve stress on the 60pin connection. Yeah, $8 soldering kit from Radio shack with the finest point and a magnifying glass, use very small .015 60/40 with lead solder. If you've never soldered before YouTube it. I've never worked on electronics before and it only took me 2 hrs to repair and put the dash back together. Go for it! You can do it! Good luck!

 

'09 Prius with Nav, 30,600 miles. My MFD stopped responding to touch data entry, but all screens still displayed. Steering wheel buttons still worked. Took it to dealer, who verified problem and replaced MFD under warranty with new part. Less than one hour to install. New display seems a little more sensitive to the touch upon data entry.
