Actually, someone on here tested the JBL system...and it goes as low as 25 Hz and as high as 16 kHz. The door woofers only play bass in the JBL (USA) version...no midrange. Midrange and high frequencies play thru the dash 2.5" speakers and rear uper door 2.5" speakers. So, the system is kinda nice because it envelopes you in bass. And because midrange and high frequencies come out of the same location, the sound is cohesive.

    EDIT: found the link: http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-iii-2010-prius-audio-electronics/62837-speakers-in-gen-iii.html

    Read HTMLSpinnr post:
"With EQ flat, I did some bass test from my laptop via AUX in. Using both pre-recorded test tones, and tone generation within Audacity, the audible cutoff seems to be 29Hz, with 40Hz being completely audible. High end, 15.8kHz is where I perceive it to start to fall off with 16kHz almost inaudible. That could either be the speakers, my hearing, or my low quality AUX cable."

That sub should make a significant difference in the amount of bass at low or high volumes. There is no replacement for a properly enclosed woofer compared to a free air speaker in a door when it comes to bass. At the very least the sub should provide much tighter bass and much more distinct bass.

You may be right...but a 5-6" sub UNDER A HARD COVER all the way at the end of the cargo area?? It just does not seem like it would be worth it, esp. the increased cost of getting one shipped from Europe to here.

Maybe if one of our UK/European members would be willing to unplug theirs and give us a before-and-after review of the sound...
I don't recall if a different crossover is used to the door "subs" if the rear one is used or if it's just a separate component that overlaps the existing system.

in fact the bass is deeper. i used the standard setup for 3 months before i have upgraded to the jbl. it is true, its a small wofoer. but i think the guys from jbl does her job very well. it is hard to discribe but i can hear more authority.
to the crossover. i have no idea how it works. i think, we have the same amplifier ( 8 channels) here in europe. there is no seperate woofer channel.

Mike, can you put your ears to the door woofers? Can you hear voices coming thru the low door woofers??

On the USA Prius with JBL, the lower door woofers (6x9 in the front, 6" in the rear) only play midbass and bass...no vocals that i hear come thru...thus, they function purely as 4 small subwoofers.

    Hi Mike,

    Thanks for the response!:D
Did you do the installation yourself? If so, how difficult was it?

    Thanks Again!

    Hi danvee,

please see on page 1 (comment nr.9) of this thread. i have attatched the original installation guide by toyota. toyota tachnicians needed 6 hrs to install all parts. at the end i have payed 1300 euro, 1000 euro for the hardware and 300 euro for the installation. from my piont of view, i give you the advise, dont try it self! but i am not a technician and not very talented in this mechanical things.

@thai: i will try it in the next days, ok.?

at all, have a nice day.

    Sorry Mike,

I missed the part saying that you had Toyota do it. I did download the instructions, though, and they make it seem more difficult than it should.
It looks to be a whole system install-which includes 6-8 speakers. an amplifier, and the sub-as opposed to adding the sub to an existing JBL system.
I was hoping that somebody here had done it themselves or had watched it being done.

Thanks for your efforts-Enjoy the music!

BTW, did anyone note that in the aforementioned manual, so kindly uploaded by Mike, there is an addendum stating:

"For Prius equipped with genuine JBL Premium Sound
ASL (Automatic Sound Levelizer) should be switched OFF to insure correct listening performance
The JBL will adjust the sound level and spectrum precisely to assure your optimal listening experience while noise level is increasing with
    vehicle speed."

For me, i have ASL OFF because ASL adds juice to mid-to-high frequencies and bass...so, it is artificially coloring the original recording. My settings are +1 on high, mid, and bass.

i have put my ears on the door woofers, no midrange is audible for me. it is the same as in the us version, i think.
but it is a nice feeling for me to have this little sub in to back :)

I wanted to know if there is any one here in the US who has installed this woofer? This is exactly what I'm looking for. I'm not an audiofile but do hear the bass lacking in my current JBL unit. I can't hear the melody of the bass as I could in my previous car. Plus, I've read on other threads that the trunk is the best place to put a subwoofer due to the wavelength of sound coming from the unit. If anyone has, how much did it cost?

    Hmmmmm. That is tempting.

But I do keep a lot in that compartment. It has my back up gym clothes / sweat towels, plus emergency weekend and day at the beach clothes (which always come in handy). And I do use it to store my computer. I'd rather not give up that space. I'll read through the thread. I may have to change it up. Thanks!

Yeah, me too...I have plenty of stuff in there. But, I would bet that the above sub + quality amp will destroy JBL small sub...and be a lot cheaper.

    Hello!
I have the JBL Package in my prius with the subwoofer in the spare tire place.
My opinion is that the sound sucks :/ i had a volvo s60 withe big sound package, and the sound was amazing (2000 model)

I dont know if i do something wrong, but there is no base and if i crank the volume to 45, it start to sound realy awful:(
is it anything i can change to make it better? i have the non nav stereo, is this a problem?
