    Hello all...

I want to install an external display ipod adapter (Kenwood KOS-A300) in my 2010 Prius IV, but in reading the manual I see that the power wiring for this device requires 3 connections - Ground, Ignition, and Battery (it also has a dimmer control wire, but I am hoping that one can be left disconnected).

I haven't come across an accessory like this before - usually they just need 12v and ground - and in these cases I just tap into the wiring for a 12v accessory power outlet to get these connections. My recollection in this car is that the accessory power outlets are switched (either with ignition "on" or accessory "on"), and they turn off when the car is shut down.

So here is the question - is there a convenient location inside the vehicle where I can connect a wire that is always "hot" with 12 volts?

    Thanks!
    Jeff

One easy spot to get at the wires is behind the head unit - you can pop off the trim and 4 10mm bolts in 5 minutes - the back of the head has ignition, battery ground etc. It's also a good start to moving wires around (you can then put the wires through the 'flying bridge - or glove compartment etc.

If you go this route, there are numerous posts here with pictures on how to remove the head unit (along with wiring diagrams).

Thanks for the feedback - should there be a wire in the head unit with continuous 12v power? I will do a search on wiring diagram here and see what I can find!

    Thanks
    Jeff

Everything is there (constant 12V, switched ACC 12V and ground) - just get a crimp on connector from radio shack - no need to even cut wires...

OK thanks - I will probably have to download the wiring diagrams for the JBL system from the techinfo site (and pay the fee). I can't seem to find a diagram in these forums for the JBL system (just the lower level one). I noticed that there appears to be a dimmer wire on that non-JBL diagram. I assume that I can tap that one into the dimmer wire for the Kenwood interface too?

    Thanks for your help
    Jeff

Actually, I should have updated this thread (I posted similar questions in several places)...

I installed this Kenwood adapter this week, and I actually dropped $15 for a techinfo subscription.

I was able to find detailed pinouts for the connectors that feed the JBL (and non-JBL) head units. As it turned out, all three wires I needed (Battery, Aux power, and illumination control) were in the L40 harness.

Pin 1 was the battery feed (light blue wire?), Pin 11 was the Aux feed (gray wire?), Pin 2 was the illumination feed that I needed (green wire next to battery wire). There are actually 2 illumination wires - the one is used reads 0 volts when the lights are off, and 12 volts when the lights are on. This is the signal that the Kenwood was meant to use. The other illumination wire carries a pulsed signal that depends on the setting of the interior light dimmer switch.

For ground, there was a nice ground screw immediately to the right of the shifter assembly on the "bridge". This was much easier to use than having to add a 4th splice connector to the L40 harness. The ground wire for my adapter used a "fork" terminal at the end, and it worked nicely on that ground screw (I did check the metal structure of the "bridge" for continuity with the ground wire in the harness).

Hopefully this helps anyone else out there. I am not sure if the illumination/dimmer wire detail was ever discussed in these forums (I searched extensively). There were some references where you had to use a wire that is in one of the Main ECU harnesses (either L7 or L8, I think). The one on the radio harness was much easier to use, but the wiring diagrams for the audio system with JBL omits this connection. I found the info on an audio troubleshooting document that details the readings/signals on each wire of the harnesses.

    Thanks
    Jeff

    Judgeless,

Where did you get tap connectors like that? I haven't seen that style before...

    Thanks

Can I solder multiple devices to that one 12v wire? Which wire should I use for multiple devices?
