Toyota to Begin PHEV Chargers Next Year

    Toyota will ramp up charger sales next year to accomodate expected plug in hybrid sales:

    Heck, with the ton of existing J1772 charger plug companies already in business, I'm wondering how Toyota figures their price will compete.

    Maybe it will be the first external charger. Prius PHV is coming and dealers are already taking orders.

    The link said 200,000 yen ($2,405) including installation costs. It doesn't say anything about US market price. It didn't say if there will be a different price or "in garage" install vs. outdoor install.

    That's a lot of money to spend on a small incremental increase in AER for the Prius PHV.

    Prius PHV charges from empty to full in 3 hours. This charger will cut it down to 1.5 hours. It is not necessary for Prius PHV but it may for the iQ EV that is also coming out in 2012.

    This charge will also charge the Leaf and the Volt. It will cut Volt's charging time from 7 hours to about 3.5 hours.

    That seems like a crazy high price to charge less than 4kwh faster, maybe its really intended for the rav4 ev in the US.

    Maybe I need to buy a phev fast while the local utility is still giving away chargers.

    Yea, it doesn't make sense for Prius PHV. I forgot about RAV4 EV, good catch.

    Perhaps, this charge will display how many kWh it charges, like a gas pump that shows you how many gallons you pumped.

    Interestingly, the current Volt's charger hides this important information and the car only shows MPG.

    i believe article says up to for the price... it is not translated well... might be dependent on your infrastructure.

    Link? (thx in advance) . . . . I've NEVER seen a freebee charger plug/charge port from the utility . . . only from 'Ecotality' . . . which is in limited areas ONLY . . . and not even included in at lease one of THE most high tech areas in CA. And Ecotality charge ports are only free in the sense that they are paid for via tax payer dollars.
    (after california credits) We paid $1,000 to get a 240V charger plug/charge port for our March/April Leaf delivery. The one pictured shows the plug going into a 120V socket. The LEAF is giving them away ... included in the price of the car. Soooo ..... Toyota's version MUST necessarily include (potential) additional socket installation, right?

    But yes . . . it IS way over priced. . . . . Maybe Doug would like to weigh in?

    Maybe, just maybe they're going to do a Prius PHV-40. :-O.

    OK, back down to earth.

    240V would be a necessity for preconditioning in cold weather.
