LED Signal Rear-View Mirror Covers

It depends on your electric and mechanical skills, but no more complicated than a car stereo and speakers. Perhaps easier, as my car sterio installations were all in older cars, when you could get the the stereo fairly easily. I think mine took me about 3 hours. 2 for the first door and then 1 hour for the second one.

You need to dissasemble the door panels, door tweeters behind the small wing window and some dash components, that mostly snap fit off and on. The door panels have a scew in the pull handle and one behind the door lock panel. A molding tool is helpful. It looks like a forked screwdriver. There are a couple of screws in the under dash panel under the steering wheel, and several connectors that disconnect fairly easily, and then will only go back one way.

Once the door panel and tweeter speaker are off, three nuts hold the mirror assembly in place. Disconnect the wiring harness and take mirror off car. With the mirror glass tilted up to max, you take a screwdriver with tape around the shaft to protect the front of the mirror housing, and release two clips that hold the mirror glass in place. With the glass removed, it is easy to release the clips that secure the back painted part of the mirror. The new mirror back covers attach slightly differently with two screws and clips.

To facilitate running the wires, I took off the plastic seals under the mirror pivot and unscrewed three torques screws. Be sure to replace them witth new seals later. Then untape where the heated glass leads exit from the wire tube and feed the turn signal wires through that tube and out the heated mirror connector end that will feed into the door. Then retape the end inside the mirror housing. I used fresh electrical tape.

Reassemble the mirror and attach back to car. Then run the wires to the front of the door, making sure they are out of the way of the window rolling down. The clear plastic sheet inside the door is secured with really sticky tar type glue, so if you want to peel it back, go very slowly to work it loose, and the glue will remain sticky enough to replace it later once your run the wires into the door. Also need to pop the wireway from the door to the car body out to easily feed the wires through it to under the dash. The wireway comes out easily and goes back by working the flanges back into place.

From there, follow the wiring instructions in the attached word file to make the connections under the steering wheel area. I just used the insulated wiretaps you can close with pliers. You need to extend the wires from the right mirror about a foot. I wouldn't worry about fuses, because you are tapping into wires that are already fused for front turn signals. You can ignore the first two pictures of wiring harnesses because they were for right hand drive car and are no longer included with mirror covers from Optionamber.

You can also search for LED Mirror threads where people have posted pictures of the mirrors on the car.

 

Check LIPOG.ORG under "our mods" for instructions. It is not a difficult install. The most time consuming part is running the wires between the doors and the body of thye car.

You need to install your BT Tech plate. It is SO much easier than installing the LED Mirrors!

Unwired, you need a BT Tech plate too. They are on sale right now.

 

Does anybody know where I can find these? I don't see them on eBay any more and I don't want to pay $400 for the JDM ones.

 

They haven't been sold on eBay for some time. I found a reference to them here, but it is a forign web site so need to e-mail them and see if they will sell a single set.

Just my 2 cents, I have the Hong Kong mirror covers and they work fine. I would buy the JDM covers if I were to do it again and get the tilt, fold option at the same time.

 

Very true, but it is costly if I get everything. But, if I am going to do it just do it all the first time around. I just like the look of the signal mirror and the safty of it. I would install the side markers, but rather not cut into the fenders.

 

Safety was the huge selling factor for me. Traffic in the Bay Area is just crazy and the more you can do to keep inattentive drivers from running into you, the better.

I was also wondering the same thing. They look quite nice but it clearly says

• Installation Instruction NOT include
• Professional installation required

so i decided not to buy it as I certainly won't have a clue how to install, although, looking at the pictures there are only a few wires so it may not be that hard for someone who knows what they are doing.

 

There are instructions online and given enough time and effort I think it can be done. The issue is whether the lights are bright enough. Yesterday I saw a car with side mirror signals that were barely visible - definitely not worth the effort to do the mod in that case.
