A Volt-Taxi doesn't make any sense with it's horrible mileage once the battery is dead. The only way a battery-powered taxi makes sense is if you can fast charge or swap batteries. Project Better Place is supposedly going to set up a Taxi Battery Swap station here in San Francisco soon.

If you'll see a Volt Taxi anywhere, it'll be in SF. They passed a law requiring all Taxis to be Hybrid (or better).

Well actually that's not too bad for a car around town. A new diesel mondeo auto trans will get about 31 mpg and a manual gets about 36 mpg (uk).

But with a boot/trunk as small as the Volts and only 4 seats/3 passengers it has no chance as a taxi. The Prius + on the other hand :)

Hey, I have ridden on a motorcycle taxi in thailand. It weaves through traffic jams much faster than a car  But the volt definitely wasn't built for taxi duty in the US or Britain.

How did we get so off topic. I thought this thread was about the greedy dealerships?

Side note: Back to the Toyota and GM bankruptcy timing, I stumbled across this great timeline of the Toyota floor mat and sticky pedal recalls at Autoblog.

Where does San Fran get all the money for these stupid projects? A battery swap of taxis sounds obscenely expensive and just ridiculous.
    And its premium fuel.

Project Better Place is supposedly installing the Battery Swap station.

Most of the Taxis in SF now seem to be Gen 2 Prii, followed by Hybrid Ford Escapes.

The ruling has a different meaning for California, since they can apply for waivers to be exempt from the state-level prohibition on emission regulations.

Whether the Volt is "thought of" as good or bad is yet to be determined. If people buy 'em, they'll sell. Otherwise, GM will have to offer up something better.

NYC was a very different ordinance than SF. If you read up the threads, the supreme court allowed rulings against NYC to stand on taking away federal power on the Clean Air act. It had nothing to do against Interstate Comerece. The SF law is about reducing company average taxi carbon emissions, and does not mandate all cars be hybrids. I posted the explanatory article higher in this thread.

Yep . . . that's why I just revised my earlier comment . . . . but you were quicker on the draw than I.

What's the Prius mileage once the battery is dead ? What's the 0-60 performance ?

Taxi drivers will not like that a bit.

lol... you should go and educate these happy taxi drivers about how bad their Prii are.

So honestly, I hope you are getting paid for this.

Should I point out the Volt's EPA city cordless MPG is 35.
