The fuel economy of a Prius-taxi will be lower than the EPA numbers.

But it'll still be much more than the competition. I get 10-15 mpg MORE than a MANUAL transmission diesel car used as a taxi and God knows how much more I get compared to a V6 or V8 American taxi.

Would I give up my Prius Cab and go back to a diesel where I'd average 35 mpg? Not a chance.

There, you've heard it from the horses mouth.

Gas is up over $3.50 a gallon, thanks to all the speculators buying all that oil futures paper--and pushing the price of oil up in the process. Maybe this is the first evidence of hybrid price gouging with that Florida dealer. He's pricing that Volt higher than what you can get for some condos in Miami Beach right now. LOL.

Whatever happened to "green" Obama? All that stuff about changing the American car industry? The least he can do is put a lid on oil speculation before oil hits $150 a barrel again.

I see Toyota and Nissan were named in the top 50 most innovative companies by MIT's Technology Review magazine this month. Toyota because of the Prius and Nissan the Leaf. The only car companies listed.

For fuel economy compared to the traditional midsize/large car used as a taxi, I don't doubt the Prius is a win. But how much does the Prius save you compared to a similarly sized car such as Corolla/Civic (taking out any extraneous incentives from the government of course) ?

Your taxi company must keep an close account of the mpg numbers over time. Mind sharing that ?

Honestly, I don't hope I am not getting paid not to do this.

    How about you ?

Jesus, you're such a fricking retard. of course a prius taxi won't meet the EPA numbers, but do you know what?

The fuel economy of a Volt-taxi will be lower than the EPA numbers.

Except there won't be a volt taxi, since it would cost a shedload to buy and be quite expensive to operate.

Per Side-by-Side Comparison, the Corolla is classified as a compact, the Civic is a subompact and the Prius is midsized.

Besides fuel costs, per CTV British Columbia - Hybrids prove very reliable - CTV News changing the brakes on a Prius every 18 months vs. every 7-8 weeks in a Corolla I'm sure saves a lot on parts and labor.

Attempting to twist THOSE facts into some kind of negative for the Prius ought to really make 'em squirm.

Anecdotes. Regardless, the deviation of the taxi fleet mpg from the official numbers is interesting especially when you consider the higher average weight. Were the taxis modded in anyway ? Can someone ask "Andrew" ?

Er, all taxis are modded. they require a meter, signage, probably a light on the top, maybe a yellow paint job......

Listen Tpfun, i think the police are closing in. you need to spend more time hiding evidence about that little girl you killed, not posting rubbish on here. I just love the way you can say "Prius is a good taxi" = anecdote but "hybrids lose long term mpg due to traction battery degredation" = fact. or "man gets more than 48mpg in a tdi" = TDI's are more economical than prii.

Michael Jackson had whiter skin than me, but the statement "black people have whiter skin than me" is factually incorrect.

You are awfully hard on tpfun. Why, I bet that if Consumer Reports had found that the 10 year old Prius had 50% of its new fuel economy, he would not have said a word. After all, it is just an anecdote.
    ;)

Although .. while any one car has a million reasons to have poor fuel economy, why would a purported design flaw leading to progressive fuel economy loss not show up in every vehicle ?

The financial reform bill was supposed to help with that, but some have their doubts.

Probably not, since it's in his sig, at least for his vehicle. He uses the crazy euro gallons, so he's getting 40 MPG US.

Speaking of taxis, the top ranked Prius' bumper repair costs should also be a concern to any owner.

Are the bumpers standard or modded for taxi use ?

    quote:
    IIHS news release
The worst performers are the Hyundai Elantra, Toyota Prius, and Volkswagen Rabbit, each sustaining about $4,000 damage or more in a single test. The Ford Focus performed the best, with about one-third that amount of damage in its worst test.
Bumper performance in low-speed crash tests:
    VEHICLE REPAIR COSTS

Front full Front corner Rear full Rear corner TOTAL DAMAGE
    Toyota Prius $2,876 $1,208 $3,964 $1,022 $9,070

That is a strange criticism especially in light of the incredibly low insurance rates associated with the Prius.

And if you're going to go with this how do you think bumper repair costs will be on a tiny-volume vehicle like the Volt?

I suspect that professional drivers have lower accidents per driven mile than non professional drivers. I also suspect that they don't pay dealer prices for body work.

I am an owner, and i am not concerned, since i've never had any form of accident. I'm also confident that if i am involved in a collision it won't be my fault, and the other party's insurers woul pick up the bill.

Perhaps Grumpy would like to share his experience. I wouldn't be surprised if the taxi-prii have "upgraded" bodywork and are stripped of extraneous equipment (weight) when put into service.

It's surprising his MPG is that low, perhaps the nice English weather has something to do with it.
