Earthquake and tsunami affects 1300 miles of Japan's coast. Fifth largest earthquake ever and with tsunami it will probably be one of the largest or the largest in terms of cost in lives and property.

Berkley seismologist says cali residents near water should probably get out.

4,000,000 buildings around Tokyo without power, several power plants on fire.

Here watching NHK television ported through China Central TV. First time I have seen such uninterrupted porting, so this must be well above average.

The Sendai airport is right on the coast, and it looks pretty messed up (by tsunami water). NHK is showing tsunami wave heights in more distant areas but I cannot read the Kanji.

AFAICT the regional nuclear plants are still online, with no detected leaks. A lot of trains have been stopped, including bullets. There is one petro refinery burning but it is ??? east of Tokyo??? If get this correctly it was lit via a reptured transport pipeline. That is quite distant from the EQ center.

The USGS 'pager' disaster estimator robot is putting this (excluding tsunami effects) as $USD 1 to 10 billions damage, with a lot of 'room' on the upside. Richter 8.4 (could be 8.9) quakes are rare (happily) and this one was quite close to high population and physical structure.

Meanwhile, one of the prediction sites Earthquake predictions, long term forecasts

called for a 4.1 to 6.1 within 500 km within a few days. We'll see later on if they call that a successful predicition.

"Warning sirens sounded across Oahu just before 10 p.m. local time. Waves of up to 2 meters above sea level could hit Hawaii just before 3 a.m, or about 5 a.m. Pacific time, Chip McCreary of the the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center told reporters."

Reports are that there is a fire in an aux turbine building, but not in the reactor building itself. The reactor is in emergency shutdown.

    No radiation leakage reported. :boom:

please don't take this the wrong way, because i have the utmost sympathy for these people affected, but this is priuschat, so i think the question is fitting: does anyone know if the Toyota plant that produces Prii has been affected?

Toyota City is well on the other side of the country and unlikely to be affected.

Thank goodness we have the lead time to get some things done before it hits... Gary said it was nuts at the marina, but it's good now.

My prayers for the folks in the path of the water.

Good to hear you're aware of the situation amm0bob. I just watched a waterfall of automobiles being swept over a seawall, just an unbelievable sight. Let us know what Gary says when the tsunami hits.
