In addition... I think that this event will show the "spring release" and the land will be lower because the slip let the ground rebound from being bent upwards from the subducting Pacific Plate...

The places near the event epicenter may be under water for several hundred years if it does like the coast of Washington and Oregon did...

I wonder if the tsunami will cause Japanese imports to raise the cost of goods. I remember the Taiwan 921 earth quake caused the computer prices to sky rocket especially RAMs. Dealers may not willing to discount prices on cars that are made in Japan such as hybrids.

He was posting in other threads this afternoon, so he must be reasonably OK.

Found this video of some guests at Tokyo Disneyland when the quake struck while waiting for a parade. I like the announcement in English at the end. I was so impressed watching the Tokyo Disney Cast Members and how they calmly asked everyone to sit for safety, and got the ropes down super fast once the announcement was made. A friend of mine was at Disneyland in Anaheim when the quake struck in Chino nearby a couple years back and while they did shut down rides as a precaution of course, guest were confused, as well as cast members who had no information and basically failed completely at any organizations. Disney Mgt in SoCal should take note of the video on how to train their employees this well.

My architect friend's wife was visiting parents in Kesenuma. She called him from atop their roof surrounded by water awaiting rescue. There are many thousands stranded on rooftops but because the land sunk and rescue is only possible by helicopter or boat.
Other friends in Tokyo are okay but with no power. Land line and cell phones work sometimes. Those living near the beach have on-going tsunami sirens that announce evacuation. They have an elderly mom that has Alzheimers and each time they have to prepare to leave. It took one of them 9 hours to return home by car where usually it takes about one hour. Another friend was on a plane about to land in Tokyo but got diverted to a distant local airport. The problem is he's an American and there are no customs there. Therefore he has been quarantined together with other foreigners in one room and cannot leave. Situation is dire.

Good news from Ken! I hope that the Fukushima nuclear plants may be stabilized and functional again very soon.

    tochatihu, thank you!

The Fukushima nuclear plant goes to a critical stage.
There was an explosion at 15:36 JST (06:36 UTC) on the 1st plant.
The outer panel of the building went away.

Probably going to be the worst one yet... an expert said something about the exposed nuclear rods at 5000C burning the zirconium shell , and turning water into hydrogen gas....
