Our little SE now resides in the closet.... and it still worked the last timed I fired it up. That little tombstone Mac is just too cute to toss. Some folks use them for doorstops and others have gutted them and installed small aquaria inside.

I can't stand one-button mice.... gotta have those right click menus. The new multi-touch trackpad on my wife's new MacBookPro is pretty neat tho!

Be careful... Once you go Mac, you'll never go back!

 

One-eyed mice are easy to change: look in 'system preferences' and 'mouse', then check the 'secondary click' box. You can choose left or right.

I was wondering about power consumption in my 13" MacBook Air (SSD) vs the iPad. I use about 10 watts, and the iPad about 2.5. Where is that dramatic savings coming from ?

Is the screen size enough to account for the difference, along with the combined cpu+cache efficiency ? Or is this a vivid example of how much real multi-tasking costs ?

 

Then you should be very happy with an Apple. I've used both macs and PCs for longer than I care to admit, and much prefer the mac. They might appear to cost a bit more at first, but when you factor in reliability, ease of use, and customer support, the Apples come out way ahead.

I have used both macs and pcs. personally, i prefer pc. i can use mac, and do for work, but i just know how to do things on a pc better.

that being said, i also have an ipad and iphone. i think they are superior to any of the competition out there. i love the ipad for web surfing. I have been considering getting a netbook for traveling though because typing on the ipad is basically like texting--thumb work. But as far as the hardware goes, ipads are top notch. i have played with android devices and did not care for them. they just seem like bad copies of ipads to me.

 

We have an iPad and a Galaxy Tab. Each has its pros and cons, depending on our usage.

My wife is a Mac person, she has the Mac Book Pro and also an Air, yet she prefers the Samsung for its smaller size. She can use it for reading and watching video more comfortably. Besides, the iPad can't support Flash, and probably never will (at least not while Steve Jobs runs the show).

The iPad is great for games though. And I plan to explore its capabilities as a music score display/reader. That's one area where its bigger screen is an advantage.

Personally, I'd prefer a double screen device that can act like a real book, e.g. the Kno.

im on my samsung dual core netbook i picked up 2 weeks ago at frys for $280 + $85 for the 64gb ssd on win xp + $21 2gb ram. it is flying... turns on in less then 20seconds and it is capable of almost everything except high end gaming. it gives me 9+ hours of battery and fast small. had the ipad had 11inch alienware notebook had the 15.6inch i7 sandybridge notebook. i like this setup the best!!! cheap and mobile and fast enough. thanks to sandybridge recall i returned the notebook...i was regreting buying a notebook... because it just cant beat a desktop for the money.. i decided to return a $1000 notebook and decided to get me a nice netbook + build me a fast desktop... and to add never buy apple notebook because u will just get ripped off trying to look cool. my sandybridge notebook was $1000 and apple just released sandybridge macbook pro starting at $1600. although it has an ips monitor (which looks awesome) but it is just a RIP OFF!!

p.s im going to hackintosh this netbook soon... i know it will be faster LOL

Newby here, and surprised to see this computer thread in the Prius Chat. However I will make Priius. I have an Asus Eee netbook. A 1/4" piece of ply in the upper glove compartment makes for a perfect fit. Velcro keeps the plywood platform put. Hooded by the the compartment cover makes the screen more readable. I use it with either my MiFi hotspot while Nancy is driving or with the GPS Street Atlas USA mapping software. PC Magazine did side by side comparisons of Xoom vs. iPad II. The iPad got the nod. It's on the PC Magazine Web site.

I don't have much experience with Acer, but that looks like something that will work for you...looks like your looking for a small, relatively cheap, notebook for versatility and internet surfing. I haven't heard too many negative things about Acer: I'd also recommend Toshiba or HP as being good brands.

It looks comparible to other netbooks in its catagory. I'm not sure how much RAM it has...but it looks like others in that price range come with 1GB. The AMD Fusion is equivalent to the Intel Adom: they're both budget processors designed to be good for portability (IE they have management to have longer battery life).

If you're in the $400 range, I think your other option is the 13"-15" laptops. A netbook doesn't have a DVD drive, while a laptop does (I at least like having an optical drive for reading software discs and if I want to watch a DVD). The battery life of a laptop won't be as good as a netbook (since it has a larger screen). This seems like a good deal on a Toshiba laptop....you'll see that since it is a larger laptop, it has better specs for the same money:

Toshiba - Satellite Laptop / Intel® Celeron® Processor / 15.6" Display / 3GB Memory / 250GB Hard Drive - Black - C655-S5132

So it really boils down to if you want it to be as small as possible, that can run quite awhile on batteries: netbook. If you're looking for best performance/versatility: laptop.

I went from
11 inch i7 alienware ($1000) to
17 inch ASUS i7 gaming laptop ($1200) to
15.6 inch lenovo NEW i7(sandybridge) laptop ($1000).

i always been a desktop guy. because never really needed a laptop to goto starbucks to show off. LOL. first of all laptop is a waste of a money if u dont need mobility. get u a desktop for same price and will get u 2-3 times the performance. if u really need a laptop get u a really cheap i mean under $500. the whole point is that u cant not go to starbucks and play 3d games. most of the laptops nowadays will do all the things that u have to do outside.

i returned all of those laptops.. im not saying that they are bad laptops. they were all GOOD actually.. i researched before buying... they never really had any problems. only thing was that they were just too expansive for the performance that i was getting.

my netbook $280 + $85 64GB SSD + $20 2 GB RAM = $385

gets me

ULTRA mobility... small as hell

GOOD battery life (10hours) unlike other laptops (2-3 hours)

FAST(enough)... i put winXP.. it boots in like 10 seconds and resumes in like 3 seconds

this particular netbook i bought had DUAL-CORE ATOM unlike other $300 netbooks
it has HIGHER resolution SCREEN so words are CRISP..

in conclusion...

with over $700 savings... now im going to build me a NEW i7 (sandy bridge) ultra mobile desktop. i mean... size of a ring binder..

1. i7 2600 CPU $300
2. ANTEC case $70
3. 8GB DDR3 ram $80
4. ASUS mini-ATX mb with BLUETOOTH WIFI-N built in $160
