    Morning all,

I just called an upholster to get a quote for installing Katzkin. As you know, I want maroon leather. :D He says it will cost ~$1400-1500 though.

I'm swinging by later this afternoon to get more information. What questions should I ask? Is this too ridiculous? Someone smack me in the head.

    You are back! :D

Well, that seems kinda high. Most people spend around $1,200.00 or so max from what I have seen. Are you doing something special?

I like maroon. I'm not sure I'd want it for a car interior, though. Judging by your avatar, your Prius looks blue. I'm no fashion maven, but I don't think those colours go well together.

Yeah, I'm back. I'm taking a break from my break. :)

My car is actually magnetic gray. I'm forced to see this white Prius with maroon seats everday I drive to work, and think it's the sweetest looking thing ever. Not sure it's worth $1200+ though. I've never spent that much money on my car since I bought it. :(

Yeah, I can picture white and maroon being attractive. More so than magnetic grey and maroon, but grey goes with just about everything. Maybe daydream for awhile about other things you could do with $1500. Like maybe a week in Hawaii. :D

Grey and maroon would work, although at that price, I would hope that it works.
What about terra-cotta? I've always like that contrast in BMW interiors:

    Thanks. In reality, I'm trying to do this something like this - without the 2-tone;

I first saw these pictures a couple of years ago, then I saw that lady's white Prius a few months ago and knew such a thing existed! Now I'm going mad.

Most likely I'll end up taking Hyo's advice and see how long I can sit on it. Thanks again.

Just came back from the auto upholsters. It was an entire hispanic family selling me on...talk about a pressure situation! Haha. But nice people and very knowledgeable. Anyways they quoted me $1463 for the whole thing! $859 for the Katzkin covers (+tax) + $520 for 8 hrs of labor. Dang...

I think I'll have to let this one ride out. I'd much rather save the $$ for my next car....

That sounds about right for Bay Area labor rates. I've heard of others paying $350-400 labor in other areas.

I installed my own and they look good, but I would pay the going price if I knew it was going to get me a good job before I would do it again.

XS, how did you install it (did it come w/ instructions) and where did you buy it from? Katzkin's website is not very helpful and only directs me to visit auto upholsters.

    I got it through
    http://www.shopsar.com/

There were no instructions with the upholstery. I bought a tool, hog ring and glue kit with it that included a generic set of instructions on a CD. The kit is listed on the Shopsar website.

A Toyota shop manual is useful when taking things apart. I bought my shop manual on CD from Fleabay for $30.

I once re-upholstered a car by taking the old upholstery off, using it as a pattern and cutting out new upholstery and getting a friend to sew it together for me so I'm not a complete novice.

I wouldn't advise a complete novice to install their own unless they were pretty good at tackling jobs they had never done before.

Thanks for the link! I'm wondering why that place is charging me $859, when this website sells it for $749, w/ seemingly all the same colors/options available.

Few questions about shopSAR.com - do they charge tax? (Couldn't tell in the checkout...) I also noticed there was no field for credit card information...???

If I were to ever do this, pending additional research, I would think it's more reasonable to buy the seat covers through this website, then hand it to them to install/sew/go to town.

    Thanks again!

My paperwork isn't handy, I don't remember if they charged tax or not.

I think the ShopSar price is a bit less than the full Katzkin price.

That looks like the Japanese Prius with the LED rows in the headlights and the custom Infiniti paint job (I forget the colour's name). It's the signature Infiniti colour.

Yeah I've seen lower prices on PC from other people that have installed Katzkins. For $1,400, it better have heated & ventilated seats included!

    You nailed it.

Yep, looks like I was kidding myself. I've already dropped this crazy idea from my mind, thank god. :D $1400 can buy a lot of stuff....

The upholster has my contact info so only if they call me will I tell them it's too expensive and then maybe I could haggle from there. I don't know how much bargaining power I have though; I don't want to offend them or greatly impinge on their hourly wage. After all they'd be installing my leather. It's not like haggling for a shirt at the flea market.

In this economy, don't pay a penny over $1200 out the door for the Katzkins (including center console and armrests). Uphostery shops are a dime a dozen. Just make sure you get references for the quality of their work if you decide to go ahead with leather seats.
