I just checcked the supply of 2010-2011 New Toyota Prius nationwide on Autotrader.com. As of the date of this post, there are 755 2010 models and over 6500 2011 models left. So if your looking for a new Prius, don't believe the dealer when he tells you a shortage exists. They are ramping up production in Japan and the supply of Prii is plentiful. There are many dealers still discounting them. You just need to look around. I used Overstock.com and got a remarkable price on a 2010 IV which I purchased. Yes it was a week before the Japan disaster but I rechecked the website today and they are still offering great deals close to me. Don't overpay!!

isnt that around half a month of supply? i think shortages will come in a month, when new cars from japan would have come if they were produced in March, and they were not.

I just looked up how many Toyota dealers are in North America and found 1445. Therefore I would say that they are in short supply if there are only 7000 left. The day I bought mine about 2 weeks ago by 1:00 they had sold 4 including mine.

Exactly. The cars that are showing up now were already produced and in the pipeline. The cars that would have been produced in March would not have been here til next month. A real shortage is looming right around the corner.

A friend of mine at work just bought one here in Phoenix last week at Power Toyota, who until recently always had over 100 on the lot. They only had 2. She bought one, and someone bought the other one while she was there.

There still may be some deals out there, but the shortage is definitely looming.

i think part of the shortage will be because of gas prices as well. I've noticed shorter supply at various dealers i've gone by in the last week or so.

I had been looking online at local dealers for a few weeks up until buying my '11 yesterday. Most of the dealers had 3-6 on their lots. I noticed hardly any 5's and barely any 4's. It doesn't seem many here have the sunroof either. I really wanted leather (is it really leather?)
The dealer I got mine from had 5 or 6 and are now down to 2. I think they're all 2's.
These cars are not super cheap, even in 2 trim. I couldn't get the dealer to work too much with me on price, but I did get 2.9%. I love this car!

This post from Associated Press suggests that shortages and shutdowns in Japan are becoming critical:

As Japan shutdowns drag on, auto crisis worsens - Yahoo! News

"The auto industry disruptions triggered by Japan's earthquake and tsunami are about to get worse.
In the weeks ahead, car buyers will have difficulty finding the model they want in certain colors, thousands of auto plant workers will likely be told to stay home, and companies such as Toyota, Honda and others will lose billions of dollars in revenue. More than two weeks since the natural disaster, inventories of crucial car supplies — from computer chips to paint pigments — are dwindling fast as Japanese factories that make them struggle to restart.
Because parts and supplies are shipped by slow-moving boats, the real drop-off has yet to be felt by factories in the U.S., Europe and Asia. That will come by the middle of April.
"This is the biggest impact ever in the history of the automobile industry," said Koji Endo, managing director at Advanced Research Japan in Tokyo..."

I hope we don't have a shortage since that's could be bad for global economies, but it seems inevitable.
