Hi- My spousal unit just leased a new 2011 Prius III. They are going very fast from the local Toyota dealer here in Northern Vermont. Dealer sold the last 8 he had in stock in the last week and now- due to Japanese production issues- there will be a many month wait for any new cars here- they felt maybe at teh end or summer they may see the next shipment. Rather than wait for a Prius IV or V, she decided to take one of the last III series they had. She traded in a 2006 Mercedes 230C Sport that just could not be driven safely in the snow we have up here, no traction.
So, since I am the tech person in the relationship, she asks me to find out the answer to all things car related. Here it is:
When your driving in ECO mode and watching that groovy Hybrid System Indicator display , there is a little ECO light over the middle section. Now, when you really press down to accelerate fast, the bar goes to the far right into the PWR section and that little ECO light goes out. Its sort of like its scolding you for pressing too hard on the gas and no light for you.
After you let up and get back into the ECO areas on the display, isn't the little ECO light supposed to come back on? I mean, are you being punished for going beyond ECO mode and the light will never return? Or is it supposed to come back on? She wants her little ECO light- it makes her feel like she must still be driving unfuel worthy if it does not come back on. These seem to be important things to her, so I am trying to find out if there is something wrong with the display, if there is additional things she needs to be doing or its the way the thing works. The manual is very vague on this.
What I wonder is: with the supply getting tight on the Prius over the next several months, will dealers start to charge above sticker like they did when this car first came out? Reduced supply and peaking gas prices will drive demand right out the roof.

Congrats on the new Prius. I own a 2010 and really enjoy it.

The ECO light above the HSI bar that roughly correlates with pedal pressure will turn off if you enter the power area and come back on if you exit the power area. However, that light is not all that useful. IMHO, you'll get better mileage paying attention to when the ICE is on and off rather than when that little light is on or off.

Pricing is likely to correlate with demand and not so much supply. Again, IMHO. The Prius plant in Japan is supposedly coming back online soon.

The ECO light should come on once you return the HSI bar back to the ECO area. Ensure that you're not driving in "B" or in EV Drive Mode (With the EV light on). It will also disappear if you're in PWR Mode.

Lastly, though unlikely, there is a setting to turn the ECO light on/off in the Settings menu (Press DISP until you get to the Settings menu. Press and Hold DISP to select it)

For a simple and direct answer to your question. Yes, the ECO lamp should come back on after you come out of the PWR section.

If it doesn't and you have no idea why.....see the dealer, or at the very least, call them.

Enjoy the ride......keep it in ECO for better mileage.

Your Prius is not punishing you because the ECO light turned off during your power acceleration and as you discovered it comes on and off during acceleration depending upon how far and fast you press the pedal. The ECO light tells you when you are driving most economically. There are some good videos and threads on the forum that teach you how to pulse/glide as well as how to understand and use the hybrid display for optimum MPG. It's fun technology.

You're right about supply/demand driving prices upward.

Don't get fixated with watching the hybrid display, watch the friggin' road! The car will sort out the MPG. I like PWR mode best, if you don't have too much of a lead foot, the MPG will not go down THAT much and you'll enjoy driving it more.

I found that the DVD that comes with the owners manual is very helpful with these types of questions.

Thanks for the responses. I did watch the DVD and I sat the spousal unit down to make her watch it as well. Still does not explain the little ECO light not coming back on after "Prius Correct" driving has resumed. But I did learn a bit about labeling and things some of us take for granted.
I explained about having to make sure you are in "ECO" mode by pressing the dash button. She tells me- "Of course you idiot, I know that". So I explain the little green "ECO" light on the left side of the dash display will come on- you know the little green light over the speedometer that says ECO. She tells me she pressing that mode button all the time and no green light ever comes on. Something is wrong with the car she explains. She can't get into ECO mode.
Ok, so time for both of us to take a trip out to the car and sit side by side in the front seats. I press the brakes, hit the power button and the car is on. I hit the ECO mode button on the dash and show her the green light- she says: "Oh, I am hitting the "Mode" button just above those buttons" and I see the climate control also has a "Mode" button. Now, I know this changes the direction of air from the climate system but she thinks the Mode button is supposed to change the modes of how the car operates. See how confusing things can be- ECO Mode vs. Mode?? Now, my wife is not stupid- she does know that the computer DVD tray, when it comes out, is not a place to hold your coffee cup, but frankly I totally see how all this mode talk gets her to want to press the button that says mode. It makes sense in a certain way and watching the DVD showing you which set of buttons to push did not change the fact that that freakin button says mode on it, so she is gonna push it.
I just have to laugh sometimes.

There is a video posted in Priuschat that is very helpful as far a driving tips are concerned, I think it is also on you tube. Sorry I can't remember the thread, remembering my name is hard enough.

It's not scolding, it's just a quick way of letting you know you're outside the efficient band right now. It's an instantaneous thing.

It's never on in PWR mode. They figure that in PWR mode you don't care so why bother telling you?

I use ECO for the bottom-end precision. I'm used to pressing it harder when I need more power.

My wife uses PWR because the gas pedal response is much more like a normal car.

The Prius is my commuter so almost all of my driving is in it. My wife commutes in our Civic so even if she wanted to use ECO it'd be harder for her to adjust.
