I wanted to improve the sound in my V but keep the stock JBL HU. I replaced the door speakers with Infinity Reference speakers (and Dynamat), added an Alpine PDX-5 amp and a Cleansweep. It sounded great but I had one problem - no bass. I couldn't find anything that would work without compromising my rear cargo space. I finally found the perfect solution: an 8" Kicker sub with enclosure. It fit perfectly in the covered storage space and still left room for the cargo cover to be stored. It gives me plenty of low-end thump and really balances out the sound. I'm very happy with the results!

How much did your set-up cost, approximately?

Wow...small box!! Nice find! This should satisfy anyone who was trying to get the European JBL sub.

Dang that's a hair too big for me. I'm looking to put an underseat sub in our higlander hybrid. I wanted to do an amp with a shallow 8", but the local guy had no suggestions for a premade box and thought it would be too small a volume for the quality shallow 8" with a custom box.

The batteries use up a lot of room under the rear seats and there's minimal cargo space when all 3 rows are in use, so a bigger sub in back is out of the question:-( I found this that looks like it may fit under the driver seat:

    Sound Ordnance™ B-8PT 120-watt compact powered subwoofer at Crutchfield.com

Did you happen to see any other thin boxes in your search?

Yes, the Boss Audio BASS900 (BOSS AUDIO SYSTEMS | ENTERTAIN YOURSELF). It didn't work for me because I needed a non-amplified sub.

How do you hear that in that location? Do you drive around with the trunk open? Did you drill holes?

Does the trunk floor panel fit over it? Does it roll around? Any rattles or shakes? Very interested in the setup

Yes, the floor panel fits over it. It's secured with velcro so it doesn't move at all. No rattles but the rearview mirror vibrates with the bass. That would happen with any sub.

here's my sub paired with an alpine mrp m500 amp. had it installed yesterday. the bass setting on the stock prius ii headunit was turned down to -3 while it breaks in. it still hits hard and clean.

Have you noticed any additional strain on the battery with this installed? As in, say if you are idling in a traffic jam - would you be able to notice the main battery draining more quickly than without the sub? Any input regarding that? Where did you ground?

If left in ready (HV battery active) the car consumes about 200watts just sitting there. add a large audio load (say another 200 watts) and you would go from 8 bars to empty in just over an hour. When it gets low the ICE will spin up to add some charge back in.

Running a large audio load in accessory mode (HV battery inactive) is a bad idea, the 12V battery is quite small so both peak power and capacity are lower than a normal car. don't have the exact data to hand, but a 200watt audio load would not last long at all on the 12V alone.

Ah, okay. The reason I ask, is that I'm planning on adding a subwoofer and an amp that will draw around 300 watts if played loudly. However, the amplifier won't always be using 300 watts even if the volume is turned down low, right? It just draws the current as the volume goes up to move the sub, I think. I'd never play the sub while on the 12v battery alone. Id make sure that it's in "ready" mode. I wonder how much the additional wattage draw would make my MPG go down.

I think I read somewhere on these boards that every 200 watts takes away approximately 1% mpg

    SGH-T959V ?

If thats the case, then I could care less. I think I'm just gonna pull the plug, and buy it.

Depends on the amplifier class. Class A will always consume rated power, and anything not used for driving the speakers is wasted as heat. Class AB will only use power as required.
