I cited this article at http://priuschat.com/forums/chevrolet-volt/85990-test-drove-volt-today-11.html#post1290119. It's finally up online now.

A Graphic Representation of What's Really "Made in America" - Feature - Car and Driver

It shows what vehicles are built in what plants in NA along w/their 2011 US/Canada part content. Click on the map to download the PDF.

I knew the Ford Fusion was assembled in Mexico but didn't realize its US/Canada part content was so low.

I just saw a Crown Victoria the other day with a "Made in America" license plate frame on it. Which is technically correct, but I assume the owner didn't realize it was Canada and not the US.

Are you certain that the license plate frame was made in Canada?

Could have been made in Canada or Mexico. Nothing is made in the US anymore.

Very useful information. Volt has 40% American parts so it is not considered a domestic product.

    Snicker

    HEEEEEHEEEEEHEEEEHEEEEE

    Good question!

Several years ago I was driving my pops down to The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. We stopped at a SuperAmerica gas station in the Twin Cities to gas up my Prius

A guy in the next lane with a Chrysler 300C scoffed at me and said "Jap Crap"

I said "THank you for buying Canadian"

He refused to beleive it. Completely ignorant. Mind you, the car was plastered with all sort of Made in America, support American jobs, blah blah blah

So I told him to open the driver door and check out his build plate. He did and then very promptly STFU

Guy behind me with a Dodge Grand Caravan wasn't ignorant but curious. He asked if his minivan was also made in Canada, and I said affirmative

He opened his driver door and was genuinely surprised at what he saw. Not angry, not a dickhead about it, just surprised.

Despite what you might think, the US is still #1 in the world in manufacturing output($2.2 trillion USD in 2009). In 2000, the US still had more than double the output of any other country. China is starting to get closer(about 66% of US output in 2009), but the US still makes a lot of stuff. Sadly, a lot of manufacturing jobs have gone away, 5 million in the last decade.

There is a great article with several good graphs on NPR Planet Money, well worth a read for those interested(As a newbie, I can't post the link).

My previous job was one of the 5 million. I now work for the State of California. Even though my new job only pays 72% of my previous job, it hopefully can't be exported to another locaton.
