Fascinating. It could be harmonics generated by some of the equipment in that room, or possibly a magnetic field. Transponder key systems like the SKS use higher frequency RF to communicate, but a low frequency coils to determine fob location. It's possible that the big motor could have interfered with fob location.

Its funny - I'm neither a scientist nor engineer (like the op) but had this issue occurred next to a utility room in an underground garage that emitted a hum I hope that I would at least given it a thought that the cause of the hum could have interfered with the key fob.

Back when I was in grad school I did graveyard shift tech support for an ISP - most of the time that there was an issue giving support was when the caller either refused to, or fibbed (such as not rebooting) and did not start back at the beginning of the instructions that I was giving. In that case I was being paid to sit there and talk to people and doing so made the night pass faster so it did not really bother me. However I just do not get people going online and asking for the time and expertise of someone for free and then fighting when they are asked a couple of questions - that just boggles my mind.

Corwyn, I think you're taking my quotes out of context. If you re-read the thread you will better understand what happened.

You notice that I said there was no interference based on noting my cell phone wasn't in my pocket, right? I should not have said there wasn't any interference, I should have just stated that I didn't think there was any based on my observations. I, however, don't believe I should have taken that much flak for saying such.

I am a scientist and an engineer. Try taking this awareness test:
Maybe then you can understand why a humming sound may have been overlooked.

I think both you and Corwyn are taking this the wrong way. If wrong allegations were made against you and you were given attitude about it, would you not be unhappy as well? At the moment, I am not really interested in opening old wounds either. The issue was resolved, and I am happy that I do not have to worry about taking my car in. I do appreciate the help that was given here by qbee and others.

Of course I am taking your quotes out of context; there is no point in repeating the entire thread, which can be read by merely scrolling upwards.

I understand the thread just fine. 1) You can here looking for free advice. 2) Expert advice was given. 3) You stated that the advice was wrong 4) The expert asked how you were sure. 4) You got annoyed, sarcastic, provided no evidence, and demanded that someone answer your question. 5) Turns out the expert was correct.

Can you please point out which of my 5 words was 'flak', that I might do better next time?

You don't seem to understand how you pissed people off. I would think a scientist would welcome some explanation on the subject, which is what I was trying to provide.

There is no reason to beat up the OP. It's hard to maintain objectivity when working on our own problems. I know I have certainly torn things apart only to discover that I had missed something obvious. So let's chalk this one up to experience and move on.
