    Ask yourself this question.
How many of the Gen I's are still running well after a mere decade of operation ?

Just estimating from the number of "regulars" here still driving the Gen I's,
    I would say "Not many".

I counted 37 PCers who reached 200k miles or more on original hybrid battery in 1st and 2nd gen Pri's. Not many repairs in most cases.

    ... and Gen I's ?
Battery life is affected by both mileage and time.

My experience on this site is that many people liked their Gen I so much that they then went on to a Gen II and/or a Gen III. I just received a letter from my dealer that they would like to buy my Prius back from me. Demand for Prii is high now.

The report that I read on CNN.Com stated that 97% of the Prius built were still on the road today. A few more than your "not many" !

Those who change cars every couple of years have little to worry about long term reliability.

About the dealer letter, I wouldn't read too much into it since they are just marketing tools for increasing dealer traffic.

That's not the same question because it includes those bought today.

So, ok, if you make a question that we cannot anwer properly, maybe you can find the numbers (proven) to show us.

Do you mind "working" for us on this subject?

There were never many G1 cars, and only a small fraction of the owners posted on PC. And over years owners lose interest in the forum. YOur estimate is useless.

Bob Wilson attempted to estimate the G1 Prius survival curve. Search for his posts if you want to read something half-way believable. I cannot remember what his method was. I know some states collect annual property tax on cars, so if that information is public domain it might allow accurate conclusions.

In the meantime tp, tell us how many G1 Prius are sitting in salvage in your city that are not from accidents.

This site says that 5 million cars are totaled annualy in the US, which gives an incidence rate of about 1/50. Use 1/150 just to be safe. Since sales figures by month are available from Toyota, a simple spreadsheet would let you see how much of the 3% currently off the road are not from being totaled.

    Go for it, tp.

How many Priuses end up being totaled is simply an accounting decision made the insurance industry.

Next, you're going to tell us that based on the threads on PC, the Prius has a lot of problems

Or maybe "based on the number of members here, Toyota didn't sell one million"

With the key point being: from accident and not failure.

    Capisch ?
