Well it's the same reason why almost everybody in the country supports reducing the deficit but when confronted with the only ways that this can happen (increase taxes and/or cut backs in their favorite gov programs) suddenly support drops to near single digits.

Hell, it's the same reason why everybody who's fat wants to be thin but when push comes to shove they don't do what's necessary to get thin.

Basically we've just underscored the fact that nothing good is free.

Still I see some significant interest in these numbers in reducing fuel use one way or another.

That survey would have the same result in every other country.
Unavoidable, the purchase price still leads the way people look at cars.

Another relevant thing (IMPOV, and off-topic) is that many people prefer to buy new than to keep repairing the "old car"...

People want requirements and costs to be distributed evenly. Remember when hockey players were not required to wear masks? Every player recognized their protective value, but none of them wanted to create the opportunity for their opponents to take competitive advantage. So they all waited until the league mandated masks. Similar deal.

Americans do not want to pay extra for it. The new Chevy Cruze Eco is perfect example. No premium, 42 mpg highway and they are selling as fast as they come in.

Except the ECO is largely underperforming while cars of the same cost are overperforming.

No our customers are reporting mid 40's on the highway and upper 30's overall. they are stoked about it.

The ECO is looking good, sorry I was looking at non-ECO numbers.

If you had a hwy only trip it seems like it would be great, both my wife and I have all non-hwy commutes and our Fiesta is over-performing in city, have not had it on the hwy yet.

What is the base price on the ECO?

Because efficiency gains don't nearly cover the extra cost. So for people who are looking at financial payout rather than efficiency for its own sake, it makes sense.

This is true for EVs but not for the Prius if the car cost is amortized over its life.

Saying 'it does not make money sense for me because I wanna new car every 3 years' is spin.

I would say that is true for many cars, but not always true. It all depends on the exact numbers. A base Prius tends to have an economic argument versus other similar cars because its efficiency gains are high and its extra cost is relatively low. ~$4/gallon gas also makes the economics easier to argue.

nope, the reception has been esctatic and the higher fuel prices could not have been timed better. May be number one vehicle in segment by end of next year, if capacity issues can be dealt with. Show me some links to the forums. some toyota trolls maybe, customers not many.

No premium? Cruze LS starts at $16,525, the ECO starts at $18,425. Hyundai put out an Elantra ad that indirectly made fun of this price premium. This CR article could throw out the Cruze ECO as an example alongside hybrids and I wouldn't bat an eye.

Like I said, if you have a highway commute these new very efficient cars are great, if you don't you will not get within 10-20mpg of a Prius.

Right now that is a significant number. On top of that, one traffic jam and you can watch your numbers plummet.
