I know this has been asked in the forum about the Gen II -- but I wasn't able to find anything in the forum for the Gen III:

I bought a 2011 Prius IV but the only model I was able to get didn't have the built in Navigation System. I know I can install one of the standard aftermarket systems, but my preference is to install the one that came with the car so that I can continue to use the built in Bluetooth / Sat Radio and not have to replace all these units / reduce the car's value.

Has anyone tried to install the Toyota Nav package on a non-nav car? If so, could you send / post details?

If not, does anyone think it is possible.?

I'm also open to other suggestions / comments / solutions -- I'm relatively new to the car ownership thing, even newer to the Prius. And I love my Prius. But I would like to have a better display unit than the single line radio that came with it, and it would be great to have some sort of integrated navigation as well.

    Thanks!

You need to do some research first if you want the Factory Nav. This may be an easy plug and play, but do not count on it.

Start by getting the wiring diagrams for your Prius IV with and without Nav and compare plug/pin configurations and components. Rent some time on Toyota's server or ask your Dealer to print them out for you. Even if not exactly the same, a good installer can make things happen.

Look to ebay or maybe a member here who changed their's out for after-market, for the Nav HU. They are out there and the Dealer will charge way to much. There are options for the back-up camera as well.

We must respect your decision to take this approach, however most here think the factory nav is lacking (I'm being nice). As far as resale value goes, Toyota equipment "after install" vs after-market will not make a difference if done correctly. VIN # still shows not factory installed.

Take your time with this and good luck what ever you do.:)

I liked the look of post #3. If this is an aftermarket unit, it looks OEM to me. I have the OEM pdf manual, and there are references to other components beyond the sky-bridge display to get the system to work properly. I also have a mod II, but felt a NAV system would be used rarely, if ever. That's just me. If you travel a lot, it could be handy - or if you use your car to make service/delivery calls in your own city then yes, a NAV system is handy.

I've had my sky-bridge apart enough to see the radio/CD system can be easily unbolted to swap in the NAV component there. But again, there's more "behind the scenes" including a special NAV areal and a processor. Good luck.

I installed the Rosen HU too on my Gen III lv II. It gave me factory look and BT to my cell phone as well as streaming music to my iphone over BT.

Besides what frodoz737 said, even once you do all the work, it'll likely be very cost prohibitive.

I think you're better off with a PND (portable navigation device) or an aftermarket solution. The Rosen units above do have a factory look but it's definitely not identical the factory nav system.

Just curious...how much was the Rosen HU? Were there any additional components required beyond the dash unit? Thanks.

Although it is probably possible, why in the world would you want to do that? The Toyota Nav system sucks! Save yourself a good deal of money, both up front and for updates, by getting another system like the Rosen. You may even want to check out the Crutchfield catalog Car Selector

You guys are officially awesome. I appreciate the feedback / push-back on the issue of installing the factory Toyota Nav System as an aftermarket.

Basically what it comes down to for me is this: I have a plug-in Nav system now (Navigon). Truth be told, it works for me for what I really need for GPS. But what I can't stand about the Prius radio is the single line scrolling text radio. It makes it difficult to figure out what you are listening to on either XM or an MP3 CD. And it is quirky, at best, to navigate CDs. Additionally, the lack of iPod (or USB support is also troubling, and I wouldn't mind it if the Bluetooth interface was a bit less bulky. Oh, and if it did my taxes and shined my shoes that would be a plus.

Now, all that being said, I figure as long as I am tinkering with the radio I might as well get something with a GPS built in, no? It certainly would be a nice, albeit not altogether necessary feature.

So... I like the look of the Rosen. Can someone who has one tell me:
    1) How good are phone calls using the Bluetooth? Is it easy to use (e.g. how easy is it to change paired phones, or dial a new number?)
    2) How is the radio display?
    3) What does it support natively -- do I need a separate snap-in / antenna for sattelite radio or will it work with my existing system? How about for bluetooth -- do I need to install another microphone?
    4) How long did it take you to hook up? Those instructions looked complicated, but maybe that is because I've only installed one car radio before ... ?

If anyone wants to recommend another radio at this point, I'm all ears. I've been dissuaded from my original plan by frodoz737 helpful comments. The Rosen seems to be a top contender but information on the device seems somewhat scarce, beyond the pieces I've found on this forum.

    1. Phone call on blue tooth is excellence. Mic is build in with the HU.
    2. Radio display not bad, easy to navigate. It has station name.
    3. If you have XM, you need to buy the XM connector.and replace with XM antenna if you have the long one.
    4. It should not take long if you have all parts. Rosen HU came with all basic connector, all you have to buy is XM connector and camera input connector if you plane to install back up camera.

    Factory look.
iPod iPhone cable included. It also charge my iPhone 4.
I can stream my music either by iPod cable or via blue tooth.
I just finish install a back up camera to this HU.
Downside with Rosen is no phone book memory, it just read your incoming, out going and missed call.
There is a video on YouTube how to install HU for the 2010.
Call trailduty if they can sell it for $799 like before.
    Good luck.

FWIW, I have no 3rd gen so I don't have a radio anything like yours (it's part of the touchscreen MFD on 2nd gens).

That said, I've never subscribed to satellite radio (not keen on paying). I almost never use MP3 CDs. They're HORRIBLY slow to load on my 2nd gen and annoying to keep having to reburn them if I add songs to my library. The MP3 navigation UI is also not great. CDs? I almost never use that either despite the 6 disc changer in mine.

There were no USB ports on 2nd gens (was new for the 3rd gen) so I use the aux in jack w/my iPod Classic most of the time and sometimes my iPhone 4 (for podcasts or streaming audio like via Pandora or the NPR News app). This suits me just fine.
