The Volt been touted in every single news clip for the past year as an EV. However, when one of the first thousand of them burns, it's now a "hybrid."

It's not a "hybrid." The Insight, Prius, Civic, Accord, Escape, Lexus, and whatnot are hybrids. The Volt is a plug in hybrid and is the first of its kind (as a fully bore released production vehicle as best as I know.) I believe the purpose of calling it a hybrid is to smear all hybrids and to put the seed of doubt into the viewer's mind even though hybrid technology has been around for a decade without any sort of issues of this nature. It's an attempt to further marginalize the ever more widely accepted technology.

If my car were to burn and it was called a "Prius Hybrid" without any mention that I happen to have plugged the "hybrid" into the wall and that's what caused the fire, that would be an intentional misrepresentation of the facts.

NASA should look into it. There could be gremlins in the electricity. ;)

So . . . keep the Volt 100 feet from any building while charging, and then life will be good. What . . . should we all go back to buying the Ford Pinto if we want to get 37mpg?

No? ok then, let's move on.

Give the man some credit. He showed a pic of a 2007 penny. That's fairly up to date, no?

I'm torn with that statement. A 2007 penny behind a glass AC fuse is like putting an apple sticker on a bell rotary phone.

Is a 2007 penny even conductive anymore?

I'd think so, since it's still plated with copper. Plus it's not like zinc is an insulator.

Many people own old houses:D But what is this rotary phone you talk of?

    Sure they are.

Now that we have circuit breakers I doubt many people are putting pennies in the fuse box and starting fires. But I also doubt it was the volt.

I still haven't unplugged that rotary phone. It has outlived at least four 'modern' phones, corded and cordless, and hasn't gone dead during the extended (>24 hours) storm-related power outages.

Another potential case, though probably still guilt by association at this point:

Investigators work to determine cause of fire

"MOORESVILLE, N.C. -- Investigators are focusing on an electric car and its charger after a fire nearly destroyed a Mooresville home.

... Investigators have determined that the fire started in the garage, but they have not determined exactly what caused it

A General Motors electric car was connected to a charging station in the garage. ..."

One possibility is that the internal wiring of the home was not upgraded (e.g. from aluminum to copper wiring) so while the 240VAC charger and the proper circuit breaker upgrade were installed to handle the extra electrical load -- the internal wiring was not able to handle the extra load and overheated (causing the housing insulation to burnup).

BTW - those rotary phone are really sturdy and all they need to work is the tiny current that the phone line already provides.

Zombie thread. Still, it's funny the news clip show a Nissan Leaf driving by, even though the charger cable clip was that of a Siemans model. Talk about tossing a bunch of old photos together in a mish mash fashion.
