I recently purchased a 05 prius and it was checked by Toyota. Has anyone had ac problems? I was reading my Bentley manual and it does not specify if the ac will or will not work if the outside temperature is below a certain level. It does give error codes but I don't have a scan tool yet. I don't want to take it in to the dealer until it gets above 70 degrees outside to find out for sure. Does anyone know?

If you don't have a scan tool how do you know the AC is giving error codes? or am I misunderstanding you?

When in the Sun with the windows up so that the cabin gets a little warm, lower the temp setting until the display reads "MAX COOL". It should blow cold air.

What I meant was I don't have the scan tool yet to read the code if there where any. We tried the max old thing, which I assume would blow cold no matter the outside conditions. I did not know if there was an automatic switch to outside air, for fuel economy, say when the temp outside is I the 40's.

I'm going to Arizona May 1st and need to make sure it's working. it was working when I bought, but it was warmer.

Make sure you have turned the A/C compressor on. With the MFD in "Climate", the A/C compressor switch in on the top left side of the screen. If it is on, and no cold air while at Max Cold, I think something is wrong.

What are the symptoms? What makes you think it might not be working right now?

The error code thing is an assumption on my part, because whenever something is not working error codes come up even if it does not display on the dash. With 35 possible codes just for the ac it is frustrating. I have had it fixed twice since it died in Arizona after my first fix. I'm taking it in tomorrow for the third time. Each time it only works for few days. I have the ac on and on max cold nothing gets it to work. It doesn't seem like Toyota of Kirkland Wa knows how to fix it. I'm just afraid I'm going to have to spend a lot to get it to work

took it into the dealer today for the third time and they said they put dye in it last time to detect future leaks, which I was aware of. they said under uv light they located a leak in the condenser and tube. They want 900 bucks for a new condenser and tube. They want $500 for the condenser when I can get the OE Denso part for $116. So I'm weighing my options. I'm sure I can do it myself. Anyone done this before? I got the 10 page guide for the job from a dealer.

I'm glad to see you got the DENSO part, but by now you may have more problems. Who ever installs it don't unplug the seals on the new condenser until last min, and its ready to have the vacuum pump turned on. ( no air in the system = no moisture in the system #1 problem in A/c. ) but first at the bottom of the old condenser remove the cap and remove the filter and dryer sock. ? is it black or white? is the metal flakes?. then there may be more damage and more diagnostic work. look at my photos i have posted about your condenser opened up. but we a all going buy you r telling up and what some one else is telling you, A A/C TECH #1 tool is the touch of his hands on a system, gauges just help aid him.
What a customer dose not tell the technician can waist time=money and false diagnosis= money$$$$$. Like putting a can of the stuff on the shelf r134 with trace dye, oil, stop leak, super cool additive, and the kitchen sink!!. this will KILL the performance of a Prius A/C.
