but thats true for any care... If Prius was sold at 10k, Toyota could probably sell 5 million per year.

Their decisions (GM) dictated the price at the end.

Yup, I agree. IMO, Volt's technology, quality and requirements don't match the $40K GM price tag. In either case, GM set their price and time will tell demand. I really want the Volt to be successful, but at $40K it won't be a car for the masses.:)

My point exactly. We will see on the gen II if the car is for the masses. I doubt it. If the volt dropped its price $10K and sold 100K units right now, my guess is they would lose $1B and the stock would drop to $20.

We see from Nissan that pricing it lower got demand up, but they only were able to deliver 452 in the united states in three months of the year. Both GM and Nissan will have much greater capacity next year and then we will see if the price changes. I doubt it will for either car, and sales will increase, but I don't think the prius has to fear until 2013. Even then more people will want a prius than a volt or leaf.

Lets see, a bad economy were many are having a hard time making ends meet. The Chevy Volt is priced around $40k. "Stealerships" tack on their gouging markup to an already inflated MSRP price tag. Now after we bail out GM with tax payer money, they are raising prices on all their vehicles by another $125.

I'm not thinking the Volt will effect Prius sales much.

That quote is pure BS. As far as advertising, I have seen WAY more Volt ads than Prius ads lately. Both Car&Driver and Motor Trend have had full 8-page advertisement layouts of the Volt in recent issues.

Realistically the Volt is priced a good $20K more than the Prius, even the tax credit won't help that much. Along with the disappointing MPGs in the high 30s once on gas and the mystery behind the battery pricing (probably in the 8-10K range at least) with a shorter warranty than the prius makes it a for sure no go. The Volt also has a tiny trunk, no spare tire and the interior space of a compact (prius is mid-size).
At their current sales rate, no way are they on track to sell 10K for the year even. I've seen plenty of dealers advertising their stock so its not like there isn't enough on the market yet for anyone that shops around multiple dealers.
