Toyota today announced that the Prius PHV plug-in will have a dedicated online ordering system, with "Priority Registration" beginning this Friday, April 22 on Earth Day. Signing up for Toyota's Priority Registration gives you, the customer, first access to an online ordering system when it becomes available later this year. Anyone can register at http://toyota.com/plugin . The new online ordering system will give buyers the freedom to configure their car right there in the web browser, select a dealership of choice, and then track the order through the production, distribution, and delivery process. It sounds like the system basically allows you to interact with a local dealership as much or as little as you want, which is a huge win for advanced consumers like those that purchase the Prius. Toyota also announced that the Prius PHV Plug-In will first be sold in 15 states starting in the Spring of 2012: Arizona, California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington. Nationwide rollout of the Prius Plug In will not commence until 2013. Side note: Did Toyota change the PHV's name back to just "Prius Plug-in"? Related stories: Full Toyota press release below:
Toyota Announces Priority Registration Web Site for All-New Prius Plug-In Hybrid TORRANCE, Calif., April 19, 2011 - - Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today announced the introduction of a new Online Order System that will launch later this year for the all-new Prius Plug-in Hybrid, the most advanced Prius yet. The first phase of the Online Order System, called Priority Registration, will launch on Earth Day, April 22, 2011. Customers who are interested in being one of the first to own a Prius Plug-in can log on to www.toyota.com/plugin and complete their registration on the site. Toyota’s Priority Registration allows the customer first access to the Online Order System when it becomes available later in the year. The new Online Order System will allow customers the convenience of configuring their own vehicle from any web browser, select their dealership of choice (within 15 launch states), and track their order through production, distribution and delivery. “The Prius Plug-in Online Ordering system was inspired by the success and positive customer feedback we had to similar online ordering systems for the first two generations of Prius,” said Bob Carter, Toyota Division group vice president and general manager. “We feel the Prius Plug-in target customer will expect a purchase experience that is as advanced and convenient as the product itself. The Online Ordering System is designed to meet those expectations.” The Prius Plug-in will begin arriving at Toyota dealers in 15 launch states in spring 2012, with a nationwide roll-out the following year. The 15 launch states include the following: Arizona, California, Connecticut, Hawaii*, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington. *Prius Plug-in online ordering will not be available in Hawaii.

Most of those states are CARB compliant. Poor Volt

    Tony,
Are you going to register even though IL is not one of the roll-out markets ?

Since the "regulars" on this site are so enamored with the guv bureaucrats at CARB, I will remind them that the Toyota HSD in all variants, Prius Plugin included, can't run above 62mph without firing up the CO2/CO/HC/PM emitting ICE.

I suggest staying off the freeways otherwise the cold ICE in the Prius (plugin or otherwise) will decide to fire.

It's perfect for around town weekend driving or for those trips to the grocery store after work. Those are the trips that put a dent in my average MPG. I could pull off 53mpg during my 54 mile freeway commute but those honey-do-lists and trips back and forth to Home Depot and Target often drop me to 50mpg or less. Imagine the boost if those trips were on electric only! My grid is fairly clean so I'd be all smiles.

No problem. It has the cleanest gas engine in the world. Plus, it will be in blended mode only when extra power is needed. It returns back to EV mode so there is no need for dirty premium gas engine anxiety like in Volt.

It has been tested for 3 years already so it should be very well tuned and refined. If we count the Gen2 PHV (with NiMH), the production version should be the third generation of the plugin.

I am 13 city miles from work. I wonder if I can make it on electric only. No part of my new commute is above 45mph.

You should have no problem, especially under 45 mph. It will depends on the temp/weather as well. You are probably an ideal candidate.

This "priority registration" and "selection process" and "ideal candidate" sounds morally debatable and eerily apocolyptic.

I suggest you watch more what is public, brought to light, and very easy to understand. Toyota HSD engines, by far, are the cleanest.
Can you point another hybrid/plug-in-hybrid with lesser emissions?

I like the idea of HV on the highway and EV in the city. Smart, efficient use of energy overall.

Doubtful in cold winter, unless you do without heating.
